Transition to Physical Trading

Hey WSO,

I am an engineer a few years out of school who's looking to make a transition into (eventually) a physical energy trading role. Now I've done some research and it seems the typical road-map to an actual trading spot is to work for a number of years in a BO/MO support role first. Up to now, I have been applying to entry-level analyst/scheduler/other support positions for several months now but have had no luck. I get the feeling perhaps that being out of school and not being in a relevant geographical area is making it difficult for anyone to take my application seriously (and not without justification).

My thought was that perhaps I would have to go back to school just to open up OCR opportunities to get a real shot. Would anyone here in the industry have some advice or guidance as to what would be a good way to accomplish this transition?

Thanks!
