A Very Successful Trader -> What to do with job search ?

Hey guys,

I recently graduated from a prestigious New York private university this past December. Throughout my years attending school, I began trading. At the age of 21 I invested my savings of $3500 into my tradeking account. A year later my portfolio held $10600, returning 202%. My trading philosophy is based on technical analysis, but I have a formula I believe works 90% of the time. In the past 3 weeks alone my portfolio has returned 80% swing and day trading. But I am at a crossroads. I have had two internships in the past, 1 as an assistant trader and another as a personal assistant to a CEO. Ive had many interviews but none have stuck. Trillium turned me down, their loss apparently they don't like making money. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I need to start my life. Thanks so much.

Appreciate the response. Perhaps just a little frustrated. Don't know how I came off as an ass, just stating the facts...dont think Im a genius but I know my skills can be utilized somewhere....any helpful advice concerning a career path would be much appreciated.

you said:

-very prestigious private university

-"their loss apparently they don't like making money"

-I have a formula that works 90% of the time

-and you titled the thread "a very successful trader"

...I think you're confusing humility with hubris

my advice is to humble yourself. if you have a good pedigree (education, GPA, extracurriculars), have been getting interviews, then it's a soft skill. practice more interviews, and change your attitude. the fact that you're unaware that you came off as an ass is a bit scary.

Okay guys Im sorry about the Trillium reference. We all get frustrated sometimes, just upset because it was a great opportunity missed. Please anyone ?

I actually thought the Trillium line was gold. Don't apologize.

But when you go for your interviews, some of the guys in here giving you the business are the same peer group of the people you want to hire you, so keep that in mind. Personally, I love all the badass traders in here, I wish I had half that luck in my FanDuel leagues.

If I had a trading system that had 90% success rate and over 10k to start with I would focus on building my nest egg to 200K+ first, then you can market your accomplishments and maybe leverage a job opportunity.

Thanks for all the responses guys. Sorry if I came off wrong fellas, I really am not a dick, in reality just a 22 year old who is hard headed but has a serious passion for trading. The reason i want a job is to start building my nest egg with a steady cash flow and then eventually try trading myself for a living (once my nest egg is big enough). However, I want to trade for someone to 1. get professional experience 2. hopefully obtain a job that has a decent starting salary. 3. have a profession I absolutely love doing. 4. try to start a career. If I were to trade for a living I would be a very happy man. That is my goal.

What i was really looking for is a specific job title ( sales trading, trading at a desk, trader at a hedge fund)....obviously proprietary shops are not ideal besides the select few that offer a base salary and require no upfront capital. If i can not get a job in this area I would pursue equity research as it interests me as well.

Thanks for all the help guys

I'm the same way, my #1 passion is trading and the capital markets and my goal is to build up enough capital to trade on my own. You won't be doing any discretionary trading though unless you go to a prop shop. If you have a passion for trading and the capital markets Sales & Trading is probably the closest you can get if you don't want a prop shop. ER is close too.

Here is a specific job title that you might be a good fit for: senior Starbucks barista. Now take your shitty $11k and get the fuck out of my house.

Under my tutelage, you will grow from boys to men. From men into gladiators. And from gladiators into SWANSONS.

I'm guessing 95% of you forgot what you were like at 22, or else you figure that your awesomeness justifies that you had the same attitude at 22. Relax, it's Friday, give the kid a break.

go to a prop desk. as long as you can explain your methodology and prove the results they should hire you. you can get 20-1 leverage on a nominal contribution (5k gets you 100k buying power). if you're really as profitable as you say then work at a desk for 1-2 years, make bank, then go trade for your own account. or just stay at the prop desk and increase your leverage.
