Alabama IB’s
Looking to start applying to investment banks in Alabama over the next 3-6 months. Should it be easier to get hired there than in other states ?

I don't know much about the Alabama IB scene, but start by asking your parents if they know anyone in IB. And if your girlfriend isn't also your sister, ask her parents as well.
My family is mostly C level executives but they are all in engineering except for the other side of the family is in politics. But not sure either one of those could help me get into IB less i can pay them off to hire me lol
what if your girlfriend is your sister and your cousin? :(
Then we would likely turn out as disgusting ,ugly, and poor as you a very bad look for the family indeed.
hi I'm a UA grad working in banking in NYC - Founders Advisors is only one I can think of in AL. I worked w/ one of their Associates in a different role/industry (Corp M&A - not advisory). I would expect comp similar to regional firm. (prob. $150k-300k) all in as associate - i can PM you my reasoning, I know someone who works there.
regarding being easier to get into..... it's a lot of nepotism, etc. in the smaller towns. Also generally not a lot of analysts. Also, with any smaller shop, no formal training generally means you're worth less. Also, partners often execute their own deals at smaller shops, ie less opportunity to earn bonus $$
Are you in state for school?
Sure PM me it, I actually reached out to one of there associates and he might meet with me. We have been emailing back and fourth trying to set something up.
I just graduated from Auburn and have a job that pays pretty well. But id like to change into IB in the future. I am trying to decide where to start my masters.
Does Regions have any IB presence in Birmingham or is it entirely out of Charlotte?
Atlanta is your best bet if you're looking to stay in the southeast.
Not Charlotte?
I am thinking it is mostly out of Charlotte, but they might have something small here.
10/10
I lol'd
Arlington Capital Advisors seems like they work on some cool deals. They're based out of Birmingham.
Yes I just added the MD on linkdln but haven't reached out to him yet.
Just to clarify, I have do not have a strong desire to stay in Alabama in fact I would like to move. Just not sure where my best shot of getting hired would be.
charlotte & atlanta fam
Should I wait until I get my series 7 at my current firm, about to take it. Also we get another bonus soon soooooo.....
Stifel has a presence in Birmingham since they bought Stern Agee a few years ago. Not too sure about how many bankers are there but they have ~40 sales/trading/research folks in Birmingham.
Wouldn't research be the best choice if I wanted to transition into IB?
I'd be careful with the specificity of your posts. If I had more time on my hands I bet I could figure out who you are. That being said, I do have connections in the area if you want to PM.
Watch out or this genius will dox and expose you as a proactive hopeful-IB Analyst. He is really smart and devious. In fact, he almost had you, he just doesn't have enough time on his hands. He never seems to have enough time on his hands. Sad.
+1 for the guy who used the confederate flag for this topic hahaha
FoundersIB seems ok. Seen some deals from them. Not super sophisticated but have a decent sized junior team.
I have had some discussions with one of them. But I need to start my masters first before they will look at me. Since I did not get a 3.5 GPA in my undergraduate
Didn't make a 3.5? Yikes. Hope you at least studied engineering like your C Suite relatives.
Nope I didn’t , did not really care about most of the classes as I didn’t see it as being applicable knowledge to most jobs.
Made right at a 3.0 same as my sister that graduated from auburn.
This is the wrong way to think about college - yet I see it being particularly pervasive in the South. It’s not a trade school; you are not going there just to train for any one job. Just because a class is not directly relevant to an entry-level grunt job does not mean it is entirely useless.
I mean I think most the ones I did bad in were entirely useless : geology , art history, then in some other for instance like in stats I got every math question correct on most test but then I’d make a high D or low C because the teacher would add questions from articles that were not all related to stats and I was not going to buy a subscription to read some BS article not related to stats at all. But those are a few examples. There are tons of classes not relevant at all on a lower or upper level.
Yeah you got a D in stats because the teacher overloaded the exams with non-math questions from random articles, lol ok. I'd ding you so fast it'd make your head spin
Why because I don’t want to read random articles not related to stats?
No because you'd likely be a bottom bucket analyst due to your inability to successfully complete work that you don't deem relevant to a process.
Little bit different when it comes to a job vs a class you pay thousands to go to and they are not teaching you the subject on which you are suppose to be learning. As far as it goes with a job it’s simple, you do whatever it takes to get the job done.if you do not have that attitude you will not succeeded, if you are willing to do whatever it takes you’ll succeed 9 times out of 10 as far as a career goes.
Completely agreed - candidate would be dinged immediately.
Regardless not my problem I did what I needed to in school I learned, I’m not there to learn about unrelated useless articles to prove to a hiring person. I am not going to try on something completely and entirely unrelated to work to somehow prove to work I’m willing to work for them. I’m here to do work and I’ll work far more hours than nearly anyone else. I’m here to get shit done now show a company how hard I tried in geology or some other unrelated field, I’d they pass on me because of that then they suffer the consequences of not having me work for them and getting a person who likely will not out in as much effort. As I said it doesnt matter to me, I’ll be successful regardless
You seem kinda stupid tbh lol
Ok but the thing is, in an interview, why would I trust what you say / get any confidence you'd be a good hire when there are perfectly good other candidates who won't make these dumbass statements?
There are many people out there who might also view geology, art history, etc. as bullshit / mindless garbage. But so what? Many of those people took pride in their work, put in the time, and didn't tank their GPA as a result. Biggest red flag from your posts is you have an attitude problem, and in no way do any of your responses indicate that you are the type of person I would want in the trenches with me when it comes down to it.
You're the type of person I'd expect to get significant pushback from because you think something is beneath you / useless. Look, a lot of the work is boring and in some ways is truly useless - ordering a logo splash alphabetically vs by market cap vs because an MD wants the order a certain way is essentially meaningless. Changing everything in an internal committee memo from first person to third person is also useless, but can you be trusted to actually change everything correctly or are you going to do a half assed job, leaving a mix of first and third person? Sure, you say you'll work your ass off because it's work related, but past actions / results don't reflect that at all.
Also hate to break it to you, but time & effort alone is not a differentiator. Literally anyone can say that, and as they say, proof is in the pudding and your pudding smells like shit.
My sister still has the same feeling 6 years later even with what she is doing now that her degree was almost entirely a waste and I’d she didn’t need it to get hired she would of been far better not to waste time on it.
Doesn't Stephens have an Alabama office?
I have not researched or heard of this company before. I will look into it
You probably should. They led the IPO for a small discount retailer known as Walmart back in the day and are probably THE southern IB.
No, Atlanta is the nearest office.
Insurance only in that office, no IB
Is there a specific city or town you're looking at in Alabama or does it not matter? Some Investment Banks I know of are Porter White & Company and Founders Advisers, both in Birmingham, which seems to be a hot spot for the top investment banks in the state. There is also Regions Bank, and Medical Properties Trust Inc.
No I’ll apply nationwide once I start my masters in the fall. My resume will be stronger by then since I can add a series 7 and a masters to it
I had never heard of them before this morning but I saw a firm called The Frazier Lanier Company out of Montgomery mentioned in an article I read this morning. Article said they hold most of the market share of Alabama's IB work and it looks to be mostly Auburn alumni. Sounds like it might be what you're looking for.
I could see about that , my uncle has very strong ties in Montgomery due to his business.
Alright guys I cant take it anymore this has got way out of hand lol. This is a troll account I do not even live in the south. I am a risk management analyst at Jefferies. Everybody just take a deep breath and calm down.
Sincerely,
James the troll.
If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. Also I hope you know we can see all of your posts/threads on this website. Its pretty obvious you're from the South and just couldn't handle any criticism. Good luck, you actually need it.
