Anyone heard of Old Oaks Asset Management?
I received a resume request through the BAT (Bloomberg) portal from them, so I wanted to do some background research. It looks like a new shop, with an interesting team that seems largely academic.
The website seems like a pretty generic Squarespace template (oldoaksam.com).
Thanks.
I looked into it for the same reason. To me it looks like the actual investment team is not that experienced (their CFO: "In June 2014 he was inducted in the Bloomberg Hall of Fame for his financial aptitude." - meaning he was still a student last year) and the way they describe their experience is a little bit shady - e.g. although he was still a student, he was involved with so many companies.
While I'm not saying it can't be an interesting experience, I wouldn't expect that much yet - it seems like they've just started and for sure AUM will be very low.
Business Administration Honors at Hult International Business School...
there's a well known saying on the street: "Hult halts your career progression"
Avoid like plague. Putting aside how amateurish it is, they are marketing funds in the UK to retail folks without registration with the FCA.
I submitted my resume through Bloomberg. If I hear back I'll let you know; it wouldn't hurt to get an interview and ask questions towards the points ya'll have raised.
Hey I am disclosing that I currently work at Old Oaks and will continue further to discuss all the points raised in the discussion. So yes our AUM is very low at the moment and I will again state it is low, but that is not the main focus of the firm. It has been working over the past few months on a HFT platform and has been debugging the algos we have to get the optimum result. That is what's occupying our time for now. The firm has not been marketing the funds to retail investors in the UK. The funds have been mentioned on the webpage, but not marketed under the definition of FCA. Furthermore, the funds are not even registered in the UK because they are CI vehicles. As for the website it is a generic webpage, just for representation purposes. The main investors for the firm are based in Asia and being a small firm the relationship is managed on a personal level, not through webpages. We believe in the people who work over here, and we are not forcing someone to apply for an internship. The only reason we offer internships is so that students might gain relevant experience and we can get some extra minds to work with us. When we were students we always faced with problems of too little internships for too any people and that is we aimed to solve in our small way. I'm here to answer any more questions you might have.
I don't know how working for this fund is so much better than having a PA.
All funds are launched in April 2015 but factsheets list 15+% performance since 2010 for most of em. "One of the most famous users of the Global Macro strategy is George Soros." Good job, back-testing discretionary global macro! HFT, structured products, equity funds, etc - that's really wide skillset. Next time I will ask my orthopedist if he can also fix my teeth.
Clearly you are marketing the fund to the general public. "The funds listed under the Investment Products section are available to all UK/International investors." ALL UK AND INTERNATIONAL INVESTORS! If I look at your investment document, then the form is intended solely for private individuals, or do pension funds now have National insurance numbers? In fact, you use SIPP form to market a cayman islands exempt company with 100 gbp min investment that's not in any way regulated? I'd expect bunch of master/phd students to understand such basic things
By the way, did your 100 gbp min amounts buy you infrastructure for all the HFT funds yet?
real quick, what do you mean when you say "having a PA"?
Hi i received an invite from your company as intern. I just submitted my resume yesterday. Im from the philippines, would you know if your company has a say with expenses of interns if we go there or allowance and all.
I'm pretty sure that they cover the expenses, but I dont know about the stipend. Did the invite state any?
I got the invite through BAT as well so I did a little research. I appreciate the response from the employee above, but my advice would be to run.
CEO: https://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=247341477 (doesn't even have the HF on his LinkedIn, is a current undergrad at Hult, and his only experience is waiting tables and as a Project Management Assistant)
CFO: https://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=104205920 (just graduated from undergrad, aka this is his first job)
CTO: https://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=312191886 (still in undergrad, thought Oaks website says he is an alum)
I think you're starting to get the point here. They also list 4 consultants, at least 3 of which are Professors at Hult.
This is your typical "were a bunch of undergrads who want to start a HF". More props to you guys and I wish you the best of luck, but I wouldn't recommend "interning" at a place like this -- just my opinion.
Just to play devil's advocate, sure its not an internship at Bridgewater or Bluecrest. But if you are a student with zero offers and nothing to do this summer, why not try to interview here? They have an AUM that is above zero, and you will get some sort of experience you can talk about next summer/next year? Even at the most reputable of places, what does the intern really do? Learn a few things here and there and go back to school.
To get any AUM as an undergrad is impressive, in my opinion. I think it sounds like a great opportunity. Take the interview if you get it. Like an old professor of mine says: "You never learn anything by talking." Go and hear what they have to say.

I just got an email also from BAT saying I got a job opportunity from old oaks management and was also told to connect with them which I have already done. They also gave a deadline for June 30th which I still don't understand what the deadline is for, also they gave a date for resuming my job duty for July 6th, still don't understand that also. my question is...am I to attend an interview before June 30th or will there be an interview before the slated July 6th?
Bloomberg states "You have 1 new Job Posting waiting for you in our Talent Search", which means you have to an opportunity to apply for it before the stated final deadline for application which is June 30. You don't have a job yet, you are applying for it, and it starts on the Monday dated July 6. After screening the resumes selected people will be emailed about their application being processed further. That should be between June 30 and July 6.
IF selected at the end of the day, will there be something like an interview?
I think so, although I sit far away from HR i can ask them...
Hi, I also received an invite from Old oaks. I sent my resume 2 weeks ago. What are your requirements for this internship ? I really want to work in your company as an intern. Thank you !
hello everyone. am I still to expect a reply from old oaks Asset Management on or before 6th of this month?
