Applying to both IB and S&T at a bank?

Hi there,

I am currently a junior in college looking at SA's and was wondering if one is able to apply to multiple functions (IB, S&T, AM, etc.) an Investment Bank (GS, MS, JPM, etc.)? Will it be looked down upon that you aren't really focusing towards picking just one you like? I talked to a friend who applied to both IB and S&T at JPM and he said they basically interviewed him for both and they decided which one fit him best (He went into S&T). Does anyone else have experience with applying to multiple different positions at an IB? Also, how does the interview process go down if you were to do this? and Lastly, would a bank know you applied to both the IB and S&T arms?

Thanks in advance for the insight.

hey everybody, I'm enrolled in a financial modeling and valuation program, i realized recently that IB is not my thing, and would like to get into S&T, i have some experience in sales and trade currencies sometimes on my own and enjoy that. i would like to know your thoughts on the situation, should i quit the program? is going to be beneficial?should i change career ? Thank you.

I did it once and it was fine, I interviewed at that bank. Btw I am in Canada too. However, I would not do it again. Pick one and taylor your cover letter to perfectly fit one of the areas.

You probably wont interview twice. They will let you interview for one position if you are lucky. Focus on one application is probably the best advice i can give you.

might send up some red flags if u get selected for both and accept both. think about this...why would they want to hire you for: 1) IB if u r interviewing for non-IB jobs - especially jobs with much better hrs 2) trading if u r looking at something like IB where u dont live and breathe markets AND 3) how r u going to hide this from them (if they dont pick up on it) especially when u start getting invited to interview receptions or superday cocktail parties and whatnot. 4) ive done similar - IB and ER - and it turned out badly. i ended up getting called by ER to tell me i was rejected from IB post-superday so I could superday interview for ER.

if u want to do both, u have to be pretty crafty.

well i'm only applying to IB & S&T, and i feel like i would do well at both. For someone like me who probably wants to do S&T long term, but who feels like the S&T summer internship is dull and would like to do the IB summer analyst work, what's the best way to go about things? I'm sure a lot of people probably apply to both, and some probably to everything... i know i shouldn't have problems getting interviews since they go on campus to interview for both, and I'm really not positive which I want to do yet

um if u want to do S+T why wouldnt u do S+T and get an offer or at least relevant experience...u would also have more free time to enjoy urself - i mean if u dont want to do IB post college there isnt really any point in interning there...
