Are there summer internships in PE?
Do PE shops have summer internships? Are they organized with a training prgoram like an investment bank?

i've heard of a few, but usually it's not as standardized as a bank and you usually need some sort of connection
Blackstone and goldman offer internships in their pe areas
One of my buddies interned there but yeah you have to basically get hooked up...
Are those in NY only or also in LOndon?
carlyle, permira, Bain Capital, apax, TPG as well. but as previously said need contact. The fund basically creates a position for you if they like you, but there is no formal program (except possibly bain cap)
I know someone who spent the summer after her junior year at Carlyle. Though, I heard she's sort of an Oil princess, haha so that's what it takes.

A couple interns at PE shop I know got in through connections (went to school with friend who's dad was lawyer for PE, or who's dad founded the PE). It's a small pool of openings, but no harm cold calling / emailing.
when i looked at carlyle's website, it seemed like they only hire people after 2+ years in ibanking or consulting. Is it possible to get a job there directly out of undergrad?
Is there any way to get one of these internships without connections?
but connections don't have to be your dad being an LP in the fund. It can be you calling up an alum of the school in the firm and establishing that connection. If you can't even do that, your school is not of the type that sends alumns into the industry, you don't know anyone else (not even someone who knows someone etc.) they I'd say the case is hopeless...
...applying directly for summer internships at big shops. I know people with no connections who get in but connections, as always, are good things.
My friend got one in his sophomore year in college: MS, San Francisco. He was very intelligent: math/econ PhD program material if he wanted to be that way, and I can see him being a quant one day.
As an intern, he worked 9am - 4am for the latter 2/3 of his tenure (and moved to IBD post-college, possibly because of his adversity to the hours). This, being smart enough to be a walk-on for pretty much any career he wanted. This is only one data point, but the moral is: don't expect it to be easy or comfortable but, yes, PE internships exist.
How is a PE internship compared to IB (hours, comps, hiring prospects...)
There are internships for undergrads at PE shops that aren't full-time track jobs.
gluk gettin a pe internship
How would you rank the prestige of the following? Carlyle, KKR, Blackstone PE, Fortress
Brand new in learning about PE so thanks for being patient with the amateur question. :-)
Carlyle Blackstone KKR Fortress
IMO
connections makes me jealous. I obviously need to start cold-calling to have a chance. This is going to be an interesting couple of weeks.
If you're an undergrad trying to cold call PE firms for an internship, chances are that it may not work. But good luck! :]
Good luck!
Good luck!
Use your school connections. If you go to a top-tier school, you will find at least a couple of alum in top level position at some PE firms. Usually, that's how the game is played in this industry...
how does training for these internships work? i'm assuming you don't get formal training and you learn on the job. if they like you and take you FT, what about training then?
And i think we have a new oldest bump award!!!
Has anyone ever heard of summer PE internships in MBA school? (3 year bumps seem to be the trend)
Yeah these exist, usually as "Summer Associate". However, PE recruitment in Business School has become increasingly competitive to the point where PEs favor candidates who already have PE experience.
I know some BB PE arms do hire for summer interns like MS PE, Goldman PIA and etc.

Just trying to expand my options and look beyond BB. I'm from a "semi-target" school but no PE firms come to campus. Just generally speaking, are there any internships available at good PE firms like Blackstone and KKR? Second, what might a summer analyst be expected to do? Will they take interns who start with nothing?
Has summer analyst program similar to BBs. I am not sure about KKR. Good luck getting a job at Blackstone its as selective as they come.
If your school is only a "semi-target", chances are that you won't get a summer w/ either firm. Those firms recruit only at H/W.
