Awards/Coursework under Education on Resume

Hi everyone

Just wondering if its appropriate to put an Awards section under Education, or if that should be in a totally different section. I have things like Deans List, National Merit, a university research position, a community leadership award, and stuff in that section. I have about 6 awards listed total.

Also, under my coursework line I have courses that are finance related but directly IBD - like management, entrepreneurship, foreign economies, etc. I have about 8 courses listed total.

This is my format:

EDUCATION
School name Expected Graduation
Degrees/Majors/Minors
GPA
SAT

Awards: Award, Award, Award,

Coursework: Course, Course, Course
Course, Course, Course

Should be OK right? No HS info either.

again, a 3.5 is a given. chances anyone else interviewing has less than a 3.5 is not good - if so they are probably an athlete + are being considered differently from you anyway. sure ppl apply with 3.4s and 3.3s but they arent ur competition.

Dean's List is still an academic award at my school which I've gotten every semester. If its a given, it can't hurt to have it on there. Most of my other awards aren't super impressive either (National Merit, Research position, teaching position, a state level leadership award)

Since an Awards section is appropriate, I feel like putting a Dean's list and other similar level awards is OK.

Also, I have like a 3.7 something so my GPA isn't THAT high that it speaks for itself.

its crowding ur resume - seriously everyone with a 3.7 made the dean's list, national merit is impressive - list ur SATs if they are 1500+, dont put stupid stuff on ur resume that detracts from what u bring to the table. i had many many awards i could list, i picked ONE - this is extreme but listing many awards can make u look like pompous ass too.

fafa, thanks for your help, I'll definetely consider that. Its just that most successful SA applicants from my school have told me that you should mention Dean's list because banks treat it as an academic cut off (since its given based on how good you do compared to classmates)

btw, sent you a message, check inbox whenever you get the chance

To be honest I read resumes so quickly I barely even notice the awards section unless there's something truly amazing like a Nobel Prize (in which case why in the world would you want to work in banking?).

You can put what you wish but you should focus on your actual job experience and interest in business/finance - if all those awards/coursework make it too crowded, remove some.

dosk, yeah, I realize its like a 30 sec. skim session. but I'm guessing after the initial cuts of resumes, and by the time 1st round interviews take place, interviewers (such as yourself, I'm assuming) likely scrutinize the resume in a little more detail once theres a manageable number left.

For example, even though this isn't a BB FA application experience: Last year when I was interviewing for an internship at a HF I had absolutely no relevant work experience besides some PWM at a local firm and my interviewer actually said "Dean's list at a top 10 school! very impressive...!" And he also went in depth to like my volunteering experience and little things such as what I covered in my developing markets or financial markets classes and stuff like that. Really specific stuff though - I felt like when I mentioned I learned about options pricing and stuff he like actively took notes about it, even though the job was to perform investment screening and build databases.

I mean, I've read that every line on your resume is fair game, so there's definitely a point in time when interviewers spend at least a couple of minutes scanning your resume and looking at it more in-depth in order for them to formulate relevant questions.

can u really see an associate sitting in his cube at a BB going - "wow look at this guy who made the dean's list"

someone who is impressed by dean's list: post and prove me wrong!

Fafa,

Different schools have different cut-offs for Dean's List - and in my school (a target), less than ~40% got into the dean's list, and it's a differentiation factor. I'm not saying that it's a huge factor, but it's not totally insignificant. Dean's list in certain schools does mean something.

Further, What makes you think that those with sub 3.5 GPA is not competition? I have seen analysts with sub 3.5 GPA but got an offer because of drive and personality. Oh, do you know what personality is?

Lastly, since you don't have a job, and since you are neither an analyst nor an associate, stop claiming to know what we think. I forgot that there are a couple of prospective monkeys on this board who thinks that every bank on the street wants them soooooo much.

Get over yourself or you will be in for a VERY rude shock if you join a bank (if you manage to make it, and that of course is a huge assumption).

screw it im just going to say what i really think.

deviousbanker he did not prove me wrong, he is referring to a small HF not a bank. the post was an invititation to be proven wrong - if u'd like to do so, thats fine, that is what i asked for afterall - but present an argument and lets refrain from referring to people as shitholes.

bannanamilkshake - who said i dont have a job and that i didnt have a selection of positions i wanted - i said nothing about myself in relation to banks - react how/e u want to what i post but please dont make shit up about me and post it as fact.

it is true that tha majority of applicants interviewed from a liberal arts background like he has are 3.5+ especially from his school - and the 3.7 plus his outstanding WE give him a leg up for first round selections and thats the point i was trying to get across.

and if the grade inflation is so bad that dean's list is actually a differentiator academically-speaking among applicants in the 3.7-3.8 range then ur right it should get listed.
