Banker Sports: Phil Takes Home the Green Jacket

In an attempt to tie the Masters into a relevant topic on the list, I'll have to point out that Phil is sponsored by KMPG and Barclays. Now that the connection is out of the way, what a finish by Phil Mickelson to beat out Woods, Choi, Kim and the rest of the field. CBS did a great job of focusing on golf this tournament over the background story. Certainly no more Tiger coverage than usual.

Golf really is the Banker's sport of choice, so I'm sure everyone tuned in. An exciting tournament by any standard. Who wasn't rooting for Mickelson? His multiple eagles and ability to get his second shots on the green, regardless of his tee shot made the difference.

I also cannot help but point out that the $7MM purse even puts most of the bankers to shame, and he gets to play golf all day! This of course is not even considering the check he gets from Barclays, which makes him paid more than 95% of the MD's in the bank. Also a little check from KPMG. A Series 7 and a CPA, impressive, Phil.

And to come full circle, Phil's Barclays sponsorship (current owner of Lehman's assets) is quite symbolic. After previous blow ups in multiple Majors (Lehman), Phil (Barclays) was able to dominate and show he still has it, not unlike the banks? I don't know. The Masters was awesome though.

I do wonder how far the PGA/Tiger/Nike/CBS would go to boost ratings especially with Tiger's performance. On the other hand, how great is the juxtaposition? Tiger's image couldn't be any worse. He plays relatively well considering the past 6 months but he cannot catch Phil Mickelson, the PGA "family man," who wins with some degree of ease and walks off the 18th to embrace his wife who has been battling cancer surrounded by his children.

At first, I wanted Westwood to win. Lefty chokes all the time, but since this is the first tournament since both his wife and mother were diagnosed with breast cancer, in the end I was rooting for Phil. Lee will win one in the near future, this one was for the girls.

Reality hits you hard, bro...

I hear Phil is a douche bag off the course. A pro I know who has met him a number of times says he is just like David Simms in Tin Cup.

I have heard the samething. Heard the nicest golfer off course is villegas.

A good buddy of mine got to walk a few holes with Phil and said he was a genuinely great guy. Said he talked with everyone that was with them.

Interesting...a friend of a friend played with villegas said he was a major d-bag. I've heard that Tom Lehman was by far the nicest guy on the tour, also in contention for this honor is my hometown boy Tommy Watson.

The big guys like Phil, Tiger, etc... are always loaded down with appearances for their sponsors. Phil probably only plays in 15 or so events per year so he has time to actually "work". There's so much fine print in his endorsement contracts regarding how many KPMG/Barclays outings he has to show up for. He also runs several charities/foundations.

I've been fortunate to have played a few times with several tour players, no big names. Usually you'll have a corporate outing at a club with 20 or so people. The pro may put on a little dog & pony on the driving range and then do a little photo op. The pro will then play 3 or 4 holes with each group and shoot the shit with everyone. Drinks follow on the 19th and then they sign a bunch of company branded schwag. It must be a hard life.

Accenture dumped Woods from their marketing campaigns after all the scandal, can understand why he no longer stood as a role model for their companies values or morals.

Banks/consultancies sponsor golfers probably based on the type of people to watch golf - not many corporate sponsors of soccer (that's more commercial banking etc.). Would be interesting to read some research on demographics and marketing in sports!

I am glad that the CBS coverage was on the tournament itself and not focused on the Tiger scandal. I mean really, who cares? The tournament is what was important and he needs to keep his private life private.

that was a great win, and im genuinely happy for phil. certainly glad the women in his life are doing better healthwise...but i wouldnt be surprised if hes teeing off on some other ladys well manicured front lawn (john edwards anyone?). lets be honest. its hard to live a faithful celebrity life w/ all the tail walking right up to you on a platter. if he is the exception, well kudos, but all we know is that just like tiger a few months ago, he currently has a squeaky clean image. and why do people genuinely care about this family image sht? in the post jordan era does anyone buy products based on celebrity endorsements any more? i mean come on.

I dunno, I'd think it was a bit weird for a company to be preaching it's standards, morals and promises to me while their MAIN mascot was sneaking around cheating on his wife with a bunch of sluts LOL!

I mean come on, it'd make the advertising campaigns comical when they weren't meant to me, I can see why companies would dump Tiger as their mascot, having said that it I agree that behaviors should have no bearing on his performance/game...
