Best Tech groups in NYC?

I'm a bit confused about these BB tech groups. It seems like the top ones (MS, GS, CS) are all in SF/Menlo Park. Do these banks still have a group in NYC? Is it not as good?

For instance, when people talk about GS TMT, are they referring to the group based in the west coast or the east?

Generally, MT is based out of NYC, Tech is based out of SF. All banks have Tech groups out of NYC that cover tech companies east of the Rockies (roughly), so mostly semis and whatever else is in the midwest and east coast, and not your Google, Apple, etc that are in SF.

If you talk to ppl in GS TMT in NY, they'll say they work on mostly media and telecom deals, and less tech.

^^ That's about as well as you can really break it down when speaking in general terms. It obviously depends on the bank but mostly media and telecom is covered in NYC while tech is covered in SF. Although, I disagree about the semis statement above - most of those companies are based in the Valley ( it's called silicon valley for a reason) or down in SoCal. There are some based in Texas and Mass, but those are few and far between.

cs tech seems to have dropped over the past year. how do you think they'll do now that boutros and other senior people have left the firm for qatalyst, code advisors, etc.?

Yup, name a BB that doesn't have some of their tech group out in NYC. Although MOST of the Tech business is done in Silicon Valley, there are still quite a few verticals flowing through NY. Electronics, gaming, and some semiconductors.

If you're really interested in the tech space, you'd be a complete idiot not to get out to SF / Silicon Valley.

Actually, just moved from SF to NY, and plan to stay for a lot of personal reasons (my wife is from the east and never wants to move so far away from her family and friends again, especially if I am working crazy hours in banking).

I met some guys from DB (admittedly not a BB) last week and they told me that their entire tech group is in SF, and the don't hire into that group out here. Is this the case with any other banks? Any other banks that have a particularly strong NYC Tech group?
