I hear culture is pretty bad. Many openings during the year. Work on small deals and comp is probably below market.
Any source for the "probably below street comp? I'm with you it probably is but just curious if there's any solid background you have on that
I know the boutique pay in Chicago
As a current employee, I’m surprised to see a lot of the comments about BGL. BGL has made strides to improve culture (Chicago office has better culture than Cleveland) and has comp in line with other middle market banks. It has changed and grown immensely since 2010. They have a few core groups that have good experience in their niche industries (ES, eCommerce, physician practices, etc.). Small to mid size deals (several $300-$500m deals in market right now). Laid back culture with plenty of direct promotes; several associates were promoted after 2 years. Hours are much better than other banks in town.
Those midsize deals are the rare. Don’t lie and say you guys aren’t LMM like Mesirow.
I have a phone interview this week with a partner, any suggestions?
Any suggestions for a phone interview?
I would expect it to be a typical behavioral interview with an MD.
I interviewed there for SA a few months ago and that's not exactly the impression I got. Seemed more sweatshop side of things than "laid back". Then again I didn't get an offer because I'm an Econ major at a target and they wanted someone with more "business coursework" (Suzanne told me when I asked for feedback) even though I wasn't asked any technicals at the superday and just interned at a fund of funds with $15B+ AUM...
There weren't any technicals? Could you elaborate more on the behaviorals they gave?
Can you PM when you get time?
Correct, most deals are in the $50 - 125m range.
