Canadian in NYC looking for some guidance
Hi everyone, need some advice here.
I've been down in NYC for the past 18 months working for a major Canadian Bank as a Risk Analyst for a proprietary trading desk. It was very similar to a hedge fund structure. The position was suppose to lead into a research/trading role but to make a long story short, the opportunity did not work out that way. I was let go in November - due in part to no fault of my own - complicated corp. politics. Quickly after, two HF managers who I used to work alongside with at the firm, snatched me up and I've recently completed an internship with them as an equity analyst/trader, I've been doing what I think would be similar work to a buy side analyst - evaluating financial statements, building models, relative value analysis etc.
After many interview processes and a few final rounds I've found my Visa is going to provide me with too big of a hurdle down here and I am going to attempt to transition back to Canada.
I am 26 years old, 3.5 years of experience(1.5 as a sales associate at a cdn boutique, 1.5 as a risk analyst at a cdn BB & 4 months internship as a trader/analyst at a NYC buy side HF), who hopes to complete his cfa level III in June. I graduated from a/the top Cdn. University with a solid, not spectacular GPA (3.4) and was/am involved in many extracurricular activities - i.e. helped organized multiple community service events/galas, climbed one of world's seven tallest peaks on behalf of Make-A-Wish foundation.
I am looking for a) a list of Canadian HF's and b) some general advice.
Any comments/advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Any help here?
No.
Thanks. Very constructive of you.
If you haven't noticed, this forum is quite poor when it comes to getting information from experienced professionals (my last 4 questions went unanswered).
To answer your question, here are some canadian hedge funds (I grabbed this from the Scotia Capital Hedge Fund index):
AFC North American Fund L.P. Hillsdale Canadian Long/Short Equity Fund Rosseau LP Amethyst Arbitrage Fund JC Clark Focused Opportunities Fund S.A.M. Healthcare/Biotech Equity Fund Blumont Core Hedge Fund JC Clark Preservation Trust Salida Multi Strategy Hedge Fund Blumont Hirsch Performance Fund Jemekk Long/Short Fund LP Silvercreek Convertible LP Di Tomasso Equilibrium Fund Landry Morin Long Short Momentum Fund Sprott Hedge Fund LP Dynamic Power Hedge Fund Mapleridge Fund Ltd. - Class B Sprott Hedge Fund LP II Fiera Global Macro Fund Marret High Yield Hedge LP Sprott Opportunities Hedge Fund LP Fiera North American Market Neutral Fund II Picton Mahoney Long Short Equity Fund TD Emerald Canadian Equity Market Neutral Fund Friedberg Global Macro Hedge Fund Picton Mahoney Market Neutral Equity Fund TD Emerald North American Equity Paris Fund Front Street Canadian Energy Fund Polar Securities - Altairis Long/Short TD Emerald US Equity Market Neutral Fund Front Street Canadian Hedge Fund Polar Securities - North Pole Capital Investments Vertex Fund Full Cycle Energy Canadian Offshore Primevestfund Vision Opportunity Fund LP GMP Diversified Alpha Fund Rival North American Growth Fund LP Wealhouse Panorama Fund Goodwood Fund Ross Smith Capital Investment Fund
Solid list. Of the funds listed there, Polar, Sprott and Salida are probably decent places to start given your background. GMP recently opened up a hedge fund - might be worth giving them a call.
