Connection with Alumni

I got in touch with an alumni who is in a position to help me. My email was tailored for suggestions and help and he sent a brief email stating he would be happy to do so, here is my problem. Should I ask for a face-to-face meeting or should I start off with the basic questions and let it progress.

Start off with basic questions and then let it progress. Take a bit of time to develop the relationship and then ask for a phone call or meeting to discuss a few more questions rather than going back and forth - if the interest or time isn't really there on your contact's part, then just continue emailing.

I had an informational interview with this person at a bank about two weeks ago. He was very nice and understanding of how hard it's to break in from non-target. He even offered some words of encouragement in his response to my follow-up email and told me to keep him updated. I recently emailed him back with several random questions, but haven't heard back in like 5 or 6 days (yea I know people are busy, especially in the higher-up position). So how long should I wait before I make another attempt and what should I say this time? (is there any chance that my questions were so random, he doesn't want to reply lol. I asked something like how long he's been living here and there lol. but seriously I didn't want to ask all work-related questions which are obviously boring) Any input is appreciated!

i'm going through the process myself so take what i say with a grain of salt. i've found sometimes, its not bad to ask random questions. not completely random, but questions that pertain to the finance lifestyle (like what do you do on weekends, do you have pets/gf, random shit like that). i find it helpful to remember stuff like this, cause when building long term relationships, you can email them and be like "well, how is your dog/newborn child" or whatever the fuck it is. (note: I normally only ask questions of this type during face to face meetings, after several work related questions... i don't think i would ask stuff like this in an email)

looking for that pick-me-up to power through an all-nighter?

Absolutely. I'm no expert either, but I view networking more as building relationships than getting jobs (though it's extremely important). I was told that in this business, you really need to find a mentor 'cause even if you manage to get your foot in the door, it'd be hard to go far without having a mentor who gives you directions. Anyway, since he said feel free to email any questions, I'll wait a couple of days then. I know MDs & VPs travel all the time.

I don't see the point of asking irrelevant questions when his responses seemed like he wanted to be more of a mentor than a friend.

I would say wait a couple of more days, my contact took a few days to response. I had to fight the natural urge and my lack of patience from sending another email. If your questions were completely random than he probably thinks they are not worth his time.
