Does ‘Looksmaxing’ substantively increase your odds of converting an internship?

Prospect in IB-M&A

I am very confident in my social skills and work ethic. I'll also have time after exams to prepare for my SA (JP/GS IB) by doing courses etc.

Just wanted to know if it really does improve your odds to actually straight up looksmaxing before an internship. I'm wouldn't call myself fat, as I play a sport for uni etc but I have put on a few pounds over quarantine and exam season recently as I am living with my girlfriend atm.

I am pretty confident that I can get a six pack, buy a few well fitted dress shirts, follow a proper skincare routine etc over the next couple months and actually sort my hair out.

Does this sort of thing make a massive difference assuming my work ethic and social skills are already pretty good? I'm of the mindset that it probably has 'some impact' but not sure how large it like he such that I'd do it over eating chocolate every now and then with my gf.

Yes because the senior bankers will ask you to lift your shirt up on Zoom to check whether you have a six pack

internships are virtual so idk what the point would be. Also you seem really self conscious

Didn't realise my therapist was in IB, do you mind if I lie down?

Jokes aside, I don't really think I'm a self conscious person - more like self aware. But who knows

Obviously not self aware enough to realize this is a silly question. Does looking good help? Yes, research shows that most people unconsciously believe that attractive people are more capable and smarter.

But the extent to which you can quantify it - no one fucking knows dude. And the probability of your looks being the deciding factor that pushes you over the edge in terms of getting a return is close to nil. If you suck, you suck. If you're good, you're good.

I seen some UGLY motherfuckers working at banks, although given it is a people business I would definitely assume that pretty people have the upper hand.

Not OP, but I'm sure there's a difference between just generally going to the gym etc and making concerted efforts to look your absolute best for an internship. Surely you'd be able to see the nuance if you're actually a vp lol

People are giving you a hard time, but I'll share my two cents. At the end of the day, it boils down to performance. Are there factors like physical attractiveness/fitness that may influence the perception of you and your performance? Yes, probably to some limited degree. For the vast majority though, no ones going to care about anything if you can't deliver, so I would just focus on doing the things that make you feel at your best and ready to give it your all. If taking the time to get in better shape is one of those things, knock yourself out.

You should 100% look and feel your best - the perception is that at your age and with this level of opportunity, your excuses are limited. You're not going to the local accounting firm. You have a top level SA. And a little chocolate is not going to make a difference.

Of course your work product is the most important. But be in shape to feel physically good and be on your game, first and foremost. Looking crisp, put together, and fit is always going to be noticed. It gives you energy and confidence. It's great your social skills and work ethic are there - that helped get you the job I'm sure - but you'll come off that much better if you look the part. I think it's highly respected if someone shows discipline in various areas of life - it's always looked upon favorably to be in shape.

I'm sure you can get the couple lbs off with conscientious eating and some exercise. Guys always drop weight very quickly when motivated.

I have no idea how you present yourself now, but use your best discretion on what being presentable entails. Don't wear a wrinkled shirt, look into getting a suit that fits you and maintain a normal body weight. These are things that will translate into benefits both at work and outside work and provide a high return on little effort.

With that being said, if you are specifically looking to get a full time offer, I have a hard time believing that the best use of your time is the effort it takes to get a six pack.... A better marginal use of your time would probably be improving your modelling or excel skills.

If you work at a shop where a 6-pack matters, you should probably not want a return offer anyway.

I understand this - but surely the marginal utility of doing modelling courses prior to an internship diminishes rather quickly in which case I'd just like to know if this would be an appropriate time sink otherwise.

That being said I am not obsessed with any of this, and it was more so a curiosity than anything.

So... you got a job at GS/JPM... and you're dismissing the value of honing your modeling skills before your internship... and instead want to focus on "looksmaxing" and procuring a six-pack.... sighhhhhhh...

A 6-pack certainly helps when you're trying to sleep with a homosexual associate in another team

I'd say you're overthinking it a bit but these things are definitely important. Getting fit and doing a little bit of grooming will help your confidence and your social skills which is invaluable but your work product will still be most important. The Halo Effect is real so work on these things but remember that there are far better ways to get a return offer than looking good and getting a six pack (that part had me LOLing becuase who tf would notice anyway)

Bro you gotta realize that this is a matter of character and habits. If you don't view yourself as a fit person, how do you think you're gonna behave once you work 80 hour weeks ? You'll have chipotle at breakfast, pizza for lunch and burgers at dinner. On the other hand, if you're someone that goes to the gym and eat healthy shit, and does it no matter what, then you're going to be healthy during your SA stint and beyond. Better set the right habits asap

Not to mention the countless litterature review highlighting the correlation between exercise and energy levels, sleep quality and dopamine production.

Mobility and health, or pizza and burgers. Your choice bro.

My god lol I love how me being in a position where I can very realistically get a six pack in a month and a half (I know because I had one a year ago) suddenly equates to I am eating papa johns all day. I do go to the gym lol, I'm on my varsity rugby team - it's just not a sport you need to be a skinny soy boy to do well at when you play a certain position.

Oh ok it wasn't clear,

Then if you're just asking whether you should go from muscular 12% body fat to 8%.. The answer is it doesn't matter and I honestly don't know why you would ask anyone. If you're at 20% or more body fat, then you're overweight and should definitely cut back on chocolate..

As a serious answer - it definitely helps with perception to a very marginal degree. Don't stress about it but if you're fit you're definitely viewed better than someone who is not. Varies more by group - at my fund partners will make comments if you're overweight - not sure how standard that is by group but as an intern you don't want to be the butt of jokes like that.

lol fact is better looking ppl have a leg up. always will.

but this questions is wild. try not to be obese or disgusting and you should be ok lol

I would say yes, looking good and not being fat will help you in any facet of life-mostly just cause you will feel more confident. I have some redness from old pimples and although I know no one actively thinks about it still can affect the way I present myself

There is nothing wrong with trying to look your best.

Research does show that attractive people get better opportunities sometimes. Also, it seems that when evaluating appearance, most people look at the overall fresh appearance as well as hair, skin and teeth. Not so much 6-pack. If you take a shower every day, have fresh and well-pressed clothes, have a neat haircut, take good care of your skin and visit a dental hygienist, you will be more than fine. Then you can focus on quality of your input during your internship.

Good luck!

Had to google and skim through a huff post article to figure out what the fuck you're talking about...that was a weird corner of the internet, please don't bring that bullshit here.
