Experienced PM Looking for Analyst

I contribute to this forum under my "normal" username, but to avoid identifying myself, I've created this throwaway (WSOAnalystSearch).

I'm a PM who is looking for an analyst with 1-5 years of work experience to be my dedicated analyst (2 person team). The firm is not a platform and I've been in the HF industry for 10-20 years.


This analyst must have a top tier academic background, investment banking experience and be a team player. Would prefer someone who is new to the buyside who I can teach / train and who can become a valuable member of the team for the long-term.

Anyone who reaches out and has a relevant background will get the details and then can make a decision on whether to interview or not. Entirely up to them.

 

Teaching is PNL detractive for 1-3 years bc of the time it takes to teach. The reason I invest in someone as a full time analyst is because I want to build a team for the long term. Summer interns are a great way to help build someone’s skills when it’s slow,  but it is even more of a commitment. And my firm has a summer program anyways and I’ll take someone on through that prog

Why is IB experience a prerequisite? Some of the best investors I've met in the space went straight to a HF out of top tier undergrad and have crushed it since 

The question is fair (I’ll answer below). The statement following it doesn’t make any sense to me. Simply because your (or anyone’s) experience is that something with certain narrow criteria exists, that doesn’t make that the most likely outcome. 
 

Joe Montana was drafted in the third round  of the NFL draft and Tom Brady was drafted in the 6th. By your logic, because the two best quarterbacks were drafted in mid rounds, should we then conclude that the best NFL quarterbacks are not successful in college?

i know great fund managers who grew up in Kansas, who have been married 2 times or never finished college. Does that mean any of those things should be pre-reqs for a job?

Unfortunately that logic is flawed in a handful of ways.

To actually answer the question, investment banking provides a host of foundational skills and training that I value because someone having those skills means I can spend time teaching them higher value added skills which makes them more valuable to me and our firm instead of having to start from square one. Could I find that mix of skills in someone else? Probably. Is this the lowest risk way to find them? In my experience, definitely.

That is my approach which doesn’t mean it is anyone else’s or that it’s the best. It’s just the process I’ve found to be successful so I’m continuing it.

 

What i said to someone in a PM:

I went straight to the HF world after banking. Candidly, I did view banking as a stepping stone to something else, but at the time, I didn't know what I was passionate about, so I figured it built my skills up and opened doors for me. Beyond that, I was going to figure out what I wanted to do and then run full speed at that. 
 

I believe in taking jobs about which you're passionate. There are a million different paths from Point A to Point Q and just because one person or a bunch of people took a-->d-->m-->q doesn't mean it's the only path or the right path for you.

PE felt like it would be banking on steroids to me. I didn't want that. I wanted a place which was less hierarchical, more of a meritocracy, faster-moving, higher-pressure, etc. So a HF made sense for me. 

 

Statistically I'll be wrong, but description is giving me strong Soros vibes for some reason. If so, OP is probably pretty legit in whatever strategy he/she's doing, and statistically has probably spent time as a PM at one of the top MMs at some point in their career (or at another legit fund) - Soros would be a much looser risk limit version of this from what I understand, with similar comp structure. I would take the time and apply if you're interested in what I assume is equity related public markets roles. Maybe merger arb as well but OP's tagged as Equity Hedge. I'd probs apply but I'm probably just about 1-2 years too old and a year from looking around externally.

OP please let us know if this method ends up working out and beats the traditional hiring a HH approach!

 

It all depends on the person but I wouldn’t necessarily rule them out. They seemingly have the banking experience so it would come down to academic background broadly, performance during interviews, personality, etc. 

 

Interesting sourcing strategy...might even save 50-100k in HH fees too. You can even check the post/comment history of the people reaching out to you to gauge how mature they are - frankly you should do this. 

Honestly most focused on expanding the candidate pool. 
 

but agree on histories. Let’s just say there are a few people with usernames that almost ruled them out based on maturity alone. 

 

Great thread really wonder if this will work, I am sure Patrick is watching closely as well. To those younger guys who are saying "why not ER, or I do not fit 100% why not". Think you should consider the gift you are getting in someone taking active role on here directly to assess candidates for a role you want. So instead of saying "why IB not ER" maybe pm OP and explain how your background could fit or fit a similar role and see what feedback you get. OP may ignore it or may take the time to respond worth a shot.

Based on OPs responses so far seems they are giving valued insights and getting valued candidates.
