Going Out Clothing

It has been brought to my attention through a member of the female gender that my going out clothes may not quite be up to snuff. Now I didn't think this was the case, nor did I think it mattered that much, but I guess for some gals it does.

So for all the fashion savvy gentlemen: what kind of gear do you recommend? What tips do you have for an apparently fashion illiterate dude? Just for reference, I've never opened any edition of GQ in my life so far, nor do I regularly frequent nightclubs. I walked into J.Crew the other day and didn't like a thing.

PS: since the last thread I created got gutted and locked down, I was hoping this one might be a little less troll-y.

Just buy a tight poly shirt from express, if you ruin it its no big deal and it looks pretty decent if you're in any decent shape.

That and be sure to rock a fanny pack with sandals

Which thread? The living in the south one where the troll faked everyone's names? Dbag.

Regarding casual fashion: in my opinion it heavily depends on your location. And that's not completely a north/south, east/west type of distinction, it's more rural vs. small town vs. suburban vs. urban (and how large of an urban area) first, then styles will vary from an east coast city to a west coast to a southern city, but a fashionable guy in NYC (and I don't mean hipster cool, but banker/lawyer after hours cool) will dress more similarly to a fashionable guy in Atlanta, Chicago or Houston (although the Texan may have a large belt buckle and boots) than a guy in NYC will dress similarly to a guy who works and lives in far suburban North Jersey.

You should dress how you like but dress sharp. Well fitting clothes. Get a few sportcoats, and not all blue. Well fitted dress shirts of different colors and prints. Decent non-square toed shoes. Nice well fitting jeans (they don't have to cost two bills though). Slacks that are dry cleaned (not chinos). When it's a polo shirt, maybe find a non Polo brand that's more fitted and fashionable. Learn when untucked shirts look cool rather than like you just got too lazy to tuck your shirt in.

My recommendation would be to ask your friends of the opposite gender for tips and to go shopping with you or even better, get a few gay friends and ask them and have them go shopping. I have multiple gay friends and a few family members and they'll give you the best pointers and take you shopping. Women pay attention to women's clothes first then just want guys to look good. Gay guys (stereotype but it's largely true) pay real attention to men's clothes and will be able to tell you what styles and particular clothes work best. I don't think I've gone clothes shopping with my wife in a decade but I've gone shopping with her gay brother 50 times.

Friends who are girls and will go shopping with me? Haha good one.

From your post, it sounds like the first issue to tackle is the fitting of shirts. All of my button downs are straight off-the-rack, so that might be my biggest problem. Aside from getting custom-made bespoke shirts, the other options seem to be getting existing shirts tailored or just get shirts that fit better from the get-go.

Can any button-down shirt be altered (no expansion) or are there limitations? Is it worth it?

What are good brands for slim fit button down shirts?

  1. watch Suits
  2. buy suits
  3. tell people you're a lawyer
  4. win at life/women/lawyering

on that note, might help to say what kind of style you want to emulate, i.e. what tv show or character you think looks good and would suit you.

that, and styleforum.

The most important thing you can do about the way you look is your figure. If you are fat it doesn't matter how well fitted your shirts or slacks are, you will just look ordinary to the opposite sex. Get yourself into the gym, build up some shape, cut the fat and you will find that pretty much everything in your wardrobe starts to look much better on you. The only catch is that if you're starting from a very low base, it will probably take at least 6-12 months of hard work to get into decent enough shape that is actually noticeable. Keeping you hair sharp and tidy is also important.

True.. u dont have to b a fashionista, bro!

You shouldn't wear a suit unless it's to a more formal dinner and I mean like Michelin restaurant or something of that nature. The equivalent of wearing a suit after office hours in my mind is a plumber wearing his overalls.

In any event without knowing more about your particular look, the most "classic" look you can have is dress shirts, think banana, hugo boss, faconnable, FCUK, J Crew, Brooks Brothers, Roberth Graham, Alexander McQueen, etc... Jeans, lucky brand, COH, Levis. Nice dress shoes (brown) and a watch. Always iron your shirt before going out, invest in spray on starch (it's amazing), make sure all of your clothes fit very well, well groomed and you should be good.

I'll sometimes wear trousers, dress shoes and a sunspel polo if it's hot outside. In the colder months you can wear a jacket, or layer with sweaters, dress shirt etc. As a side note I personally go to my barber often for touch ups. I ALWAYS roll up the sleeves on my dress shirts to just below the elbow, and they are almost always slim fit shirts. For undershirts, it really depends on how much you sweat, I don't sweat much soooo I don't bother. If you do or you are going somewhere that will lead to that, wear one.

That look is timeless, you won't run into any problems. Basically be on point, hygiene/grooming, shirt, pants, belt, shoes, watch and you're good to go. Stop listening to women, they don't know shit about how you should dress.

I would say probably 99% of the time, jeans + dress shirt should be worn with lighter brown dress shoes. Keep in mind I leave the 1% open in the event I've missed something and forgotten about it. Lighter brown is better than darker brown with that look. Basically you'll get a LOT more use out of brown shoes than black.

A different example, I'll wear a light blue dress shirt, argyle mostly brown with some orange sweater and then a pin stripe jacket from banana republic, nice jeans and half the time wear chucks (gray) instead of dress shoes.

Levis are fine, personally I like the 501s for the fit but the other styles are fine. The point is to look good, good fitting jeans with the right wash accomplishes that. Poorly fitting true religion jeans look like shit compared to well fitting levis. Don't sweat the small stuff.

Wow. Someone recommending FCUK, Brooks Brothers and Alexander McQueen in the same sentence.

It really depends on where you'll be going out. You don't want the bergdorf look for a les dive bar and you don't want the polo jeans and dark shoes look if you're going to a mercedes benz fashion week after party.

Easiest and laziest thing to do is hit up a boutique spot in soho and ask one of the boys from chelsea who work there to show you some new styles. Buy what fits and call it a day.

I think a basic set of polos, nice jeans, some khaki blazer looks and a variety of shoes can take you just about anywhere.

Got any particular ones in mind?

I haven't been there in some time but atrium has nice clothes with a bit of a west coast taste. I'd suggest starting there. Rather pricey so don't feel pressured to buy anything unless you really want it. They sell some high end japanese denim (more for a club setting) and flashy blazers. Great club wear and going out clothing. Anything there should be suitable assuming you're under 48.

Great suggestions folks, keep them coming.

Just dropped some coin at Banana for crisp new non-iron tailored slim fit button-downs, they have a 50% off deal going on right now. I look so much better haha, the difference in fitting is night and day. I'm getting aroused just looking at myself in the mirror...not even joking.

@"Dingdong08" there were some seemingly gay guys working at the store that were really helpful, I asked them for advice a few times.

This is mostly catered towards analyst (1-3 years out of college) but you'll at least look respectable at any age and won't be overdressed for bars nor necessarily underdressed for clubs

Feel free to mix and match whatever patterns and colors you like. Main thing is fit. Get slim fit shirts. Those pants I linked are a perfect in between between hipster tight and relaxed fit (will give you a defined profile without being skin tight).

As you progress in income and age you might wish to try more higher end brands but this should provide a nice staple lineup

Great stuff here, love the specific examples and links.

In terms of fitting for jeans, should the waist be small enough so you can wear the jeans perfectly without a belt, or should there be some give? For example right now I have a pair of 505s which aren't baggy but the waist is definitely a little loose without a belt.

In terms of shoe color, are you in agreement with @"ArcherVice" that light brown shoes are better like your first link or dark brown is preferable like your third link? Or does it not matter? This is assuming you're wearing dark jeans.

It's hard to put into words how they should fit, when you see a guy with jeans on that aren't hipster tight, but have a tighter fit and bring out the shape of the leg without sticking to it, that's the right fit. The waist should have a tiny bit of give but not much.

I think light brown shoes look much better than dark brown shoes.

If you want a more European look check out H&M. Not necessarily the highest quality, but will give you an interesting flair. Then as everyone else said: Brooks brothers, j. crew, banana republic etc.

I would also toss out a recommendation for a nice pair of leather boots for the winter/rain.

My weekend looks: 1. Polo shirt (light colors) + Shorts (Khaki or dark colors) + Boat Shoes 2. Short-sleeve shirt (solid/dark colors) + Chino trousers (Khaki or pastel colors) + Loafers 3. Plaid shirt/dress shirt (light colors)/Jacket with T-shirt underneath (match dark colors with light colors and vice-versa)+ Jeans (blue; dark or light) + Boat shoes/Sneakers

Basically, it is: Upper - Polo, short-sleeve shirt, plaid shirt, dress shirt, jacket, t-shirt Lower - Shorts, chino trousers, jeans Shoes - Boat shoes, loafers, sneakers

For more formal occasions (weddings and romantic dinners) of course there's always blazers and suits. But we don't need those on a casual day/night out, do we?

If you care about this matter enough, don't forget about accessories like a nice watch. It's good to have each kind: Leather strap, steel strap, rubber strap, digital, analog.

Fortes fortuna adiuvat.

Here's some random thoughts I had:

For casual hanging out I was going to suggest Chubbies (shorts) but since you're skinny they might not look too good so maybe it's best to stick with the slightly longer length short (never cargos whatever you do).

I personally hate sneakers for anything but gym or sports. It reminds me of the way kids, hipsters, and ghetto people dress. I like boat shoes alot and suggest you check out Sebago's or Frye's (Sperry's are ok, but I think they're cheaply made). Otherwise I'd wear loafers or some other slip on dress shoe.

Some well fitting, good quality tees are another good item for casual summer. I'm not talking graphic tees.

I saw ArcherVice advocating brown shoes but I've always preferred black with denim esp if the denim has a washed look to it. That's really just personal preference.

I think the posters saying being in decent shape and finding clothes that fit well are on the right track. As far as the style, you really just need to figure out what you like and what suits your body.

What are some good brands for quality tees? How appropriate is a tee during the nighttime?

I know this isn't helpful but I really don't have a specific brand for tees. I do like some stores though like South Moon Under for casual clothes and other non-chain boutiques.

I think wearing tees in the summer is fine to most places other than clubs, which usually aren't as popular in the summer anyway.

The most important thing is that whatever you wear feels natural and you're confident wearing it. If it seems forced or awkward, people will notice and think you're trying too hard.

For me, I actually go out with a t-shirt a lot, one that that fits well but simple like a solid deep v (not too deep) or something with an interesting design. A basic black t with a cool sport coat and nice pair of jeans is really versatile and good for about anything, including "dress to impress" events at fancy roof top clubs. But if somehow your night transitions to a warehouse party in Brooklyn (hey, ya never know...) you won't get judged and ignored by the hipster in charge of drinks. If everyone else is wearing button ups, you'll stand out a bit while still looking classy/fashionable and also maybe give off a slight edgy vibe, which a lot of girls like.

Try out Zara they have blazers on sale here and there and they are great. Also Club Monaco, their slim fit shirts are great, I put them up against J.crew. Also they usually have tons of sale and you can find clearance shirts for $20.00. I am XS Slim-fit. But I am working my way up on getting more built.

Also try out this new place called Joe Fresh they are currently in Canada and NYC only. I have two shirts from Joe Fresh and have gotten good compliments on them. The founder of Joe Fresh is also the founder of Club Monaco.

http://www.joefresh.com/

To the OP and everyone else, get your shirts hemmed from the bottom if your short. Most shirts are for people who are 6ft even if the size is small. I tend to get my shirts hemmed from the bottom or they are too big. I am 5'8 as well.

Regarding socks, one basic rule of thumb is to not have the exact same color, plain sock as your shoes because it will make it look like you're wearing boots. Unless you're wearing all black, then you just look like a ninja or a German modern performance artist. Also, make sure your socks are long enough to never show skin. Faux pas.

For more formal/business attire I usually go plain with socks. In a suit, I'll go for a slightly darker color sock than my suit and/or have slight patterns like herringbone or a same color design. Some people do the crazy sock thing but most people that I see who do this don't really pull it off. They're just wearing loud and obnoxious socks with a suit; however, some guys can do it. Maybe it's their personality, maybe it's their sense of fashion or maybe a combo of both, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you know what you're doing or you risk like you're just wearing pastel colored horizontal striped socks to stick out. Maybe in a less conservative industry, but in finance, consulting, law, etc I just feel like you're sticking out for no reason, unless you're one of the guys who can pull it off.

Casual is a different story and you can go for more patterns and colors in my opinion. Just go for a few pairs at first that aren't that crazy and build up to see what you feel comfortable wearing and fit your personality, and that's really the important thing about fashion: wear it because you feel comfortable in it, it fits your personality and because you like it. For example, if you're a conservative Mormon with a stick up your bum (see Mitt Romney) it's going to look strange if you come out in pastel pink striped socks because it's nowhere near your personality. If you're a more artsy guy, even if you work in finance, you may feel comfortable and be able to pull them off. I'll wear colored and patterned socks but I lean towards the more conservative, preppy, city-style in general so I would just feel weird putting on pink striped socks. My brother, who's a senior creative advertising guy and slightly more hipster (not a throw up hipster type though), does it and it fits, even in his late 30's. If I'm going for something other than plain socks I'll usually slightly match it to something on my shirt or jacket, but that could be because the old school prep rule in the 80's was to go for crazier socks but match them to your shirt, and I learned to dress in the 80's.

Brands: I just buy cheap socks and it doesn't matter how much money I have, I will never buy expensive ones. I lose socks at a rate of probably 50-100 per year so it just a waste. Or I get mystery holes in them after a week. I just go to department stores (Macy's, not Neiman Marcus) or discount stores like Marshalls or TJMaxx. Gold Toe's are always a go to.

If you want to impress your lady, wear something nice apart from your usual torn jeans and t-shirt. You don't need a tuxedo all the time to look great, try a blazer or sport jacket with your shirt and trousers. I got minerom Napoli tailors which didn't cost much at all.

I just stick to the classics, like Brooks Brothers, Polo, J. Crew and maybe VV. And not because it's "in fashion," but because those timeless looks are going to still look good a year or even decades from now. But just one last solid piece of advice: never wear cargos.

I'm pretty sure bankers only wear gem-encrusted Ed Hardy shirts and fist pump the night away at Mansion.

I thought Ed Hardy was never in the Banker circle, seeing as its only 80 - 150 a shirt. I figured gem-encrusted Great Wall of China were more the high roller style. In which case, Scoop in SoHo is the location for a nice $600 shirt.

Reality of going out is, you wear what you like to wear, there is no "Banker's night out clothes", minus the night out right after work, i.e. work attire with or without a tie. I've seen people wear jeans and dress shirts, jeans and t-shirt, blazers, no blazer, polo. I don't think it's a huge deal to be honest, but dress shoes are usually a must to get in 99% of decent places.

Wear what you want to wear when you aren't at work, not what "Bankers" are supposed to wear. There isn't some fuckin' dress code outside of the office. Got damn.

theking, hilarious and spot on as always.

wear what you want but keep in mind if you go to a club (marquee duvet home etc) you should at least be in a button down and/or blazer with decent jeans and decent shoes, you can also get away w a good tshirt if you have good jeans and shoes on

otherwise just wear whatever you're comfortable in..oh and no sandals lots of bars wont let you in

contrary to popular belief, investment banking is a job, not the equivalent of a lobotomy...why you wouldn't retain whatever personal style, or lackthereof, that you had previous to becoming a "banker" (drum roll please) is beyond me. furthermore - bankers aren't a homogenous cult - believe it or not, there isn't some equivalent of the preppy handbook out there for bankers detailing exactly which hue your socks must be, or of what material acceptable watch bands are made of. grow a set and figure this shit out for yourself.

Ok, putting aside the OP's stupid "where do bankers shop" mentality, how about some real advice on good clothes for going out to high-end clubs and bars.

I come from a city/go to bars where flip flops are more common than real shoes and a button down shirt is more likely to get you thrown out then let in, so I really am clueless on this. "going out clothes" are basically the only part of my wardrobe that I really think I need to fill in when I move to NYC this fall.

Specifically, any recommendations for: Good "dress" shoes for going out? (I'm guessing not the cap-toe or wing-tip Allen Edmonds, etc. that you wear to work) Nice jeans? Casual button down shirts? Casual blazers?

AltESV:

Loafers, (Tod's are my favorite but if you're going to a dance club they might get stepped on hardcore)

Jeans, self-explanatory. 7s, Citizen's, R&R, nobody cares who makes your jeans, just make sure they fit well. Get the bottoms tailored so you don't like like a fool.

Button down shirts, if you're going to wear a blazer over them I would suggest tucking them in. Then, just get shirts where you normally do, except be less conservative with colors and patterns (ie no straight blue or white shirts). You can also go the (less, imo) cool untucked, no blazer route, but then you're going to be limited to shorter cut, lower quality (think jcrew or brep) shirts.

Casual Blazers, either get a distressed blazer if that's your style or a nice one with less conservative colors/patterns (same concept as the button down shirts). My favorite is actually the jacket portion of one of my "flashy" i-dont-wear-this-to-work suits; navy with bright blue track pin-stripes. I wear this with a yellow or lavender shirt, tucked in, dark jeans and brown or black loafers, depending on the shirt, just to give you an idea.

All in all, it depends on your personal style / where you're going.

1818 is a pretty good value for $500 in my opinion other than the Madison they're not THAT conservative-Milano and Fitzgerald are actually pretty sleekly cut IMO. If you're looking for superstylish suit you'll end up paying more than $500 to get the same level of quality.

I'd stay away from the tux if you're only getting one suit and I would stay away from black and pinstripes.

There have been many great comebacks throughout history. Jesus was dead but then came back as an all-powerful God-Zombie.

Michael Andrews -- IMO a custom-made suit will always fit better, plus give you the option for any stylistic/personality details you can think of. At this shop they start at $895, which is pretty good considering you're going to spend additional $$ altering anything you buy off the rack, if you want it to fit properly.

NB There is around a 6 week lead time at places like this

I spent 120 for a suit and shoes. Maybe thats because im poor

"Look, you're my best friend, so don't take this the wrong way. In twenty years, if you're still livin' here, comin' over to my house to watch the Patriots games, still workin' construction, I'll fuckin' kill you. That's not a threat, that's a fact.

nyc club: usually will wear darker colored button-downs, dark-washed jeans, loafers/vans/desert boots dive bars and more casual places: button-down, tan chinos or dark-washed jeans, loafers/sperry's j.crew, brooks brothers, vineyard vines, etc.

@lockhardt nyc clubs are where you might want to wear slightly dressier shirts. like a nice white button-down, a black button-down, dark blue/navy button-down, etc. plaid button-downs or polos are perfect for more casual places.

you really can't go wrong with tattersall shirts (i'm a huge fan of these), plain colors, or gingham checked/striped shirts no matter where you go

I'm speaking from a girl's perspective but I saw guys usually wearing button downs and jeans. No shorts or flip flops, ever, at night anyway. Try rolling up the sleeves if you get hot? A collared t-shirt also worked. Pop it up if you wanna look especially douchey.
