GS Ops offer vs. other potential ones: should I continue looking? (long read)

Hey fellow WSOers,

Just like some other members on here, I am a rising junior who is currently looking for a summer internship. I am currently a Business Management major pursuing a certificate in International Trade & Investment, with a 3.65 GPA from a non-target school. I have been a long-time lurker, but based on recent events, I felt the need to come on here and ask you all for advice! I apologize in advance for the long read. Here is what has been going on:

  • Back in August before the semester started, I applied for an early insight program for GS up in NYC. The two divisions I wanted to look at were Ops up in the NYC area and PWM down here in Miami (which was my preferred position of interest, as well as location since I am in that area).

  • I got into the program and got flown up to NYC to meet the company and had 'super day' interviews. I felt like I did really well. Much better than I expected..

-About a week or so later, I got a call back from GS saying that I got the summer internship offer for Ops up in NYC. Still no word on the Miami PWM internship at the time of the offer.

  • During the waiting period before I received the offer, I applied to JP Morgan's Asset Management - PWM summer internship program, to P&G for two other programs (although they rejected me pretty much two weeks later). I also applied for GTS at Merrill Lynch (Merrill Lynch has it on their taleo as part of IBD but I don't believe it is? My school has it listed as Asset Management. Both divisions interest me.)

However, the day before Halloween, Google was recruiting at my school, since one of their regional managers was an alumnus of our Honors College. Since I am in my school's Honors program, I was able to meet the regional manager and was heavily encouraged to apply to Google by my program's Deans and Professors.

Even though I have the GS offer on the table, it's for the BO. From the research I have done (here mainly), I can tell that people are not fond of the BO in the finance world. From what I have read, many people consider back office roles at banks to be 'dead end'. In addition, while I would be making much more than my older siblings did when they graduated ($55K prorated salary, plus a one time $1,500 housing stipend, and GS pays half time for OT), I have been told that it would be difficult to live off of that in NYC with the rent. Also, I have a lot of personal things going on with my family that I am trying to take care of down here in Miami. I would love to have an internship down here (my preference if possible), but I would definitely consider moving for the summer if the right opportunity arises.

So, doubts have started creeping in my mind about the Ops offer and if it's right for me. However, part of me is afraid to lose it because I don't have experience in finance. On top of that, as mentioned before, I do not come from a target school. Recently, GS down here finally got back to me about PWM and I wasn't even offered an interview. That does not leave me too confident about my outstanding applications with JPM and Merrill Lynch. The Google recruiter on campus flagged my resume with the GS offer when I spoke to him. I also included that in the general application as he mentioned. Nonetheless, Google has a very long hiring process, so I definitely know that I won't get an expedited offer anytime soon (still waiting for the initial interview).

How should I proceed? Even though two of my other main offers has said no (GS PWM, P&G), should I keep tabs on what I already have for more competitive offers geared more towards my interests (JPM PWM, GTS at Merrill Lynch, Google) and look for other internships, or would this be too big of a gamble? For the NYC area, is my offer competitive? I have been pulled in so many directions. Some advisers at my university have told me that it is best to wait it out. Others have told me to take the offer I currently have with operations, and if by a miracle something better/more competitive shows up, that I can easily switch over without burning too many bridges since it's just an internship.

I know there are people who would kill to have any offer from GS on their resume. I just want to make sure that I am doing what's best for me, whether it would be taking the internship I currently have with Operations, or taking the gamble with my other outstanding applications for more FO banking roles/the possibility of Google.

My current personal circumstances have made this all the more frustrating and nerve-wracking to deal with, but I am trying to do my best to put them aside. I am so sorry for the long post. I just needed to get everything out there. Thank you in advance for your constructive replies!

Working in NYC is an incredibly rewarding experience, but it sounds like you're psyching yourself out. Would you be happy in the city with everything else going on in Miami?

That's what I am trying to answer myself. I think I can be happy if my current home situation doesn't continue to get worse. More than anything, I just don't want to take an offer this 'early' in the recruiting season and end up kicking myself if I end up missing something else I see better suited to my skill set and such. Especially with what I have learned about BO vs. FO and such from this site. I do feel bad since GS was expecting a decision from me much earlier for the Ops role and now it's December. They have had every right to pull the offer off of the table and move on but they are telling me to keep them updated with a timeline ASAP. I do know that Google doesn't have a timeline before 2016 for an interview. I am moreso concerned about JPM PWM and Merrill Lynch since I applied to then much earlier and have not heard anything back yet for an interview. I am not even completely sure who I should contact regarding the GS offer for the possible expidation (the only one who knows for sure is Google).

Hey guys,

I just wanted to update you on what was going on.

Yesterday, I got contacted by AM recruiting for the JPM GWM application I sent out. They haven't offered me an interview yet, but the e-mail stated that out of the potential pool of candidates that has shown interest, I was selected to participate in a webinar this coming Monday where participants can talk to people who currently work at the firm in my division of interest to find out more about the skills required, ask questions, and brush up on interview skills. So, there is definitely some movement. It'll be the first time I get to interact with a recruiter and let them know about the GS offer, since my university's career center said the recruiter information is confidential until you get contacted. Google told me that they will begin interviewing on a rolling basis once the new year comes around. So I already know what to expect out of them (not expediting the situation). Nothing from BAML so far.

To make matters worse, I am panicking. I was at school today for two classes, one which had a final presentation, and the other class which I had right after with a final exam. My phone was off. I look now, and I saw that GS called me several times while I was taking my final. I do understand that this looks really bad. It adds to what has already been a stressful week for me (large paper due Monday morning for one class, and a final exam for another class on Tuesday that pretty much dictates what grade I get. This class is a pre-req for two other classes I am taking next semester, so it's pretty damn important).

So stressed about everything right now. I need to pass this exam on Tuesday. As for GS, what's the best way to go about apologizing for not hearing my phone during my final presentation and final exam today? I am going to e-mail the recruiter who's e-mail I have to explain to her that I was in-class for exams (I literally just got home and wrote this) and I apologize.

Thank you all in advance for the helpful advice during this stressful finals week.

Hey bud, I'm not an expert but if I were in your shoes, I would call them and accept, and explain that you were in a final. 1. They are about to rescind your offer. 2. If you haven't heard from the PWM guys, you probably won't 3. Google is a longshot for anyone unless you're a biomechanical engineer from Stanford

What are the updates?
