High Quality Art on your body

Is anyone else into high quality ink and respected tattoo artists? I only have two tats now, but maybe getting more - however I am very selective of each piece and the necessity to get a quality artist to do the work.

How many tats do you have - do you want more?
Bonus points if you've seen Ink Master - it just proves how arrogant and not that good many tattoo artists out there are - willing to f'up your body and not care. I'm a perfectionist so that can't happen for me.

i dont think anyone wants anything fd'up on their body but agreed that majority of artists are complete shit. use Instagram and not yelp

Working on a nice sleeve piece currently. Been working with an artist for around 2 years in Chicago, but unfortunately he moved to California this year so I’m on the lookout for some good artists in NYC when I move to finish the piece. It’s been a slow process on purpose, just want to build life story into it as it progresses. Interested to hear what others have (or would like to have) done, and also how people perceive ink in finance these days. Still some old-guard thought I’d imagine, so obviously make sure you can cover your ink with dress clothes, but I think as some of the Boomers move into retirement a lot of white collar professionals will be more accepting of tattoos. That’s what I hope at least!

got one large piece and am in the process of designing my 2nd. I would have 2 pieces but went back to my original artist after he opened a new studio and got really bad vibes, he rushed the draft design and it wasn't close to what we'd discussed so I walked and lost my deposit (better than a permanent mistake).

here's what I've done and would recommend - get names of artists from people who have art that's high quality and in the same style you want (polynesian, japanese, american, etc.), ask them who they use and who they wouldn't recommend. do this over and over and over again, plenty of bartenders, musicians, and amateur athletes (run club, crossfit box, MMA gym) will willingly share. see where there are commonalities. does everyone go to the same 1-2 shops? what artists are the most in demand? then, and only then, do you go to a website and see their work. it could've been a fluke, but you'll be able to see if they're legit. and then I'd go visit them to see how you jive with them. if they're going to be tatting you up for hours, you better be able to get along for the transaction.

also, I seem to remember you're in Charleston area, so I'd cast a wide net. I probably wouldn't go as far as Florida, but I'd go to Atlanta, Columbia, Charlotte or Raleigh for work, I'm sure there are good artists there if someone local doesn't meet your needs.

also Simp4EBITDA  had my work for well over a decade, not even my team members know I have it. there's no reason to wait on a design that no one will see in a professional setting. what I'm saying is I'd wait on anything that's below the bicep or on the chest until you're more established. ribs, back, shoulder, upper leg, all fair game.

my piece covers my entire ribs on one side, black outline with 2 colors for filling (5 needles each). interestingly enough, the worst part was not the ribcage, which just was really bad vibration. the worst? the worst was obliques. no bones to press against, so when the artist was filling it in, just had to press deep into the skin, felt like someone with parkinson's was stabbing me.

Definitely some good points. I’d probably fly to NYC / LA / Miami for a good tattoo artist.

Both of my pieces are from East Side Ink in NYC

My rule has been nothing outside the "golf clothes envelope," so there's no reason a client / colleague will ever know.

When I hit my walk-away number, I'll get a sleeve. My next one on deck is upper back / shoulder.

Got two on my legs (both numbers, so didn't have to be too worried about getting quality artist).  Really want to get a Kodone tattoo next.  Think there's a point in going to a really great artist if they're just copying someone else's art?

Some tattoo artists just don’t have good fundamentals and lines. I would prefer to seek out the best or at least check out their portfolio to see their skills.

I've met your MD - he has two full sleeves - he was joking obviously.

This is his ride - notice he doesn't have bumper stickers, but.....

Tattoos are trashy AF. As my MD once asked, "would you ever put a bumper sticker on a Bentley"?

I would not go that far because lots of people get tats today but it is just too permanent for me.  I would rather dress up my body by wearing nice clothes.   As liberal as I am, I am pretty conservative in some ways.  When I was much younger, I did have an ear ring but only because I thought girls would like it.

I have a sort of nuisanced opinion on tattoos.....I actually don't like the extremely well done tattoos. I think when someone has a sleeve of gangland tattoos or a collection of random stuff that they got on random nights and points in their life, there's something more natural and authentic about it.

The really high end tattoos have almost become a new form of yuppy cultural appropriation. In my opinion, there is something more badass about an old navy veteran with a bunch of crap on his arm from ports in Asia than your $5,000 sleeve. Again, just one guy's opinion here.....

Yep got a bunch - sleeve, work on other arm, multiple on back, multiple on leg, and planning for many more. Every time this subject comes up on WSO there's inevitably some WASP yuppie soyboy who went to Dalton who comes in with "Tattoos are trashy and for low life uneducated people; why would I deface my body, blah blah blah." Sick and very unique take bro. Hasn't impacted my career at all and if anything has led to some fun conversations. At the same time, I couldn't give a fuck less what people think about what I choose to do to my body. If a prospective business partner/employer/contact etc. were to look down their nose at me for the fact I have a bunch of tattoos, we probably wouldn't get along otherwise and is likely someone I wouldn't want to do business with or work for anyway.

I wouldn't throw rocks if you lived in a glass house. As I posted earlier, I personally dislike high end tattoos exactly because they're becoming a thing for soyboy yuppies. Working class people don't get those types of tattoos even when they hit a good paycheck.

There is a certain type of high end tattoo art these days that just screams, "I went to an elite college, have a boring job that can pay for $5K of ink, but still want to prove to myself that I'm a cool guy."

Hopefully, you don't have any of those, but I think you know what I'm talking about if you've been paying attention to the evolution of tattoo art in the past 15 years or so.

Didn't even read your previous comment until now so I wasn't calling out you specifically. And anyway yea I agree. But it's usually pretty easy to spot someone like that within ten seconds of meeting them or seeing their very isolated and obviously expensive tattoo. Don't think most people who are fairly covered/have a bunch of pieces fit that description... Even more cringe are the basic sorority girls with dumb stereotypical shit like an infinity symbol on the wrist, some stupid word or phrase like "grateful" in some mom-script on their arm, etc. Every time I see that, a piece of me dies inside

I have a partially finished half sleeve on my right arm and a tattoo on my upper mid back.

I also have work on my left ribs and upper left arm that I have been in the process of getting removed for the past year and a half. It is aaaaaalmost there.

I'm going to reiterate the importance of finding high quality artists. Removal sucks.

I’m planning on getting a few. My first will be on my left bicep and a simple quote from my late uncle

I've got 8, 6 of which I got in rapid succession over the past year. Early covid had me drawing up a bunch of ideas that I got blasted when shops opened back up. Dusty Cramer at Sparrow Hawk in Atl does insanely cool linework pieces, also check out Mike Adams out of Fredrick, MD if you're into gothic realism - super crispy work
