How to respond to this networking email response?

Hi,
So I'm currently trying to build up my network for breaking into IB. I sent out an initial networking email to an MD at Goldman asking to meet for coffee. I obtained this contact through one of my old neighbors whom I'm still in touch with that did an SA internship at Goldman about 6 years ago. The MD responded to my email thinking that I wanted an SA job for this coming up summer and effectively rejected my request for a chat, but I'm well aware that SA applications have been closed for some time for 2018. I was actually thinking about a spot for 2019. I actually made no mention of applying for an SA position in the email - just said I wanted to talk about his experience in IB and his career path, but since I mentioned my neighbor's SA position, I think the MD thought I wanted an SA spot.

Would anyone have any suggestions on how I should respond to this MD? I don't want to come across as annoying or too aggressive, but this is Goldman and I feel I might as well try everything I can to at least get my name in front of someone.

Thanks in advance.

I would ask your neighbor what to do in addition to the advice I am about to give you. Try contacting the MD one more time, and make it clear that you are talking about 2019, and if he still does not respond positively, then forget him for now and reach out to analysts; they will be more sympathetic to your story because it was their story not to long ago as well. VP's and MD's usually don't give a rip about you; not trying to say they are all that way, but a lot of them are. By the way that MD responded to you, it wasn't a pleasant experience. You may already know this, but developing a thick skin is a must if you want to work on the street. This is just the way that a lot of streeters treat you, whether they mean to or not.

Hey man - I agree with the previous comment. I've been through and will continue to go through the recuriting process involving email correspondence like your's. Probably best to go through some junior bankers and not burn any bridges with the MD. That being said, definitely thank the MD for his response and keep the opportunity open for future networking. Good luck!
