Institutional sales or Equity Research
I have two SA offers and need help with a decision
1) Alternative Investment Institutional Sales at a big buy-side firm
or
2) ER at a BB
If my goal is to end up on the buy-side in an investment team which would be the best choice?
I imagine with the first option I will get the network but not the technical side whilst the second option it would be the opposite.
John Walker, bummer your thread hasn't had a response yet. Maybe one of these threads could point you in the right direction:
If those topics were completely useless, don't blame me, blame my programmers...
Why go through the sell-side to buy-side transition when you can just start on buy-side? The technical skills will come. Getting the foot in the door is invaluable.
He wants to be on an investment team, institutional sales on the buy-side isn't that. I would advise he go the ER route if he is looking to become a Research Analyst at a buy-side firm. I don't think sales is preferable to ER in that scenario, regardless of buy or sell side.
Thanks for the input. On the sales role I've been told time and time again that I will be working close with the investment team. Wouldn't this be beneficial already having a network with that team and knowing how they work so whenever I make the jump I would just need to make sure my technical background is on point? Or is this still irrelevant?
