Interviewing timeline somewhat of a rant*
My interview process for a significant brokerage/IS team (Eastdil, CBRE, JLL, HFF, C&W) in a top market is going on one and a half months. At a rate of 1 interview a week. In person ever since the phone screen, these interviews consist of multiple team members each sit-down. Who else can I expect to meet? Their wives? I've already started to learn how to model complex baking techniques just in case it happens.
I have a friend who is 3 months in for a similar gig.. it happens. Don't stop pursuing other opportunities.
I'm in a similar position for a top 5 brokerage (not CBRE/JLL) in NYC and the process has been taking forever.
Job was listed in January, first contact with recruiter was early to mid-March, spoke with MD last week, and now awaiting next steps, all while the MD is outta the country for the next two weeks. Really sucks man but nothing else to do except to keep applying to new opps and refreshing that Gmail.
Newmark?
Something along those lines
Has anyone heard back from this team?
Yeah it's mentally exhausting. Continually relearning the economic drivers of a particular market, keeping up with recent deals, and just staying fresh for that many engagements is tough. The amount of facetime is crazy.
So... in other words, doing what you'll have to do if they give you a job? It sucks to go through a long interview process, but it's kind of ridiculous to complain that you have to do all this work, when that's what you'll be asked to do if hired. They don't owe you a position and you're free to accept another job.
Get another job offer and tell them you have a ticking clock. That'll force them to give you a yes or no.
I've hear d a lot of companies say how hard it is to find good talent right now (probably not top tier shops) when the interview process takes weeks and weeks.
Put the gun to their head. Tell them you have interest from other groups, even if it isn't entirely accurate, and that you want to know what the hiring timeline looks like going forward.
Interviewing is so fucked, it would be wise for all of us to never interview for anything again
.
It's definitely a trend at the larger brokerage shops. They seem to never give you a straight answer nor do they have the decency to let you know their decision after you've already interviewed with 3-4 people there. Don't lose sight of what you want in this extremely exhausting stage.
It's partly because they are non-committal/disorganized, and partly because they are seeing how long you can stick it out. This business is a war of attrition on both the brokerage and principal side. It takes a lot of time to get traction in most arenas of this business especially when it comes to sourcing business (listings and acquisition opportunities). If you're annoyed at the interview process then you should know that the brokerage team you're interviewing for deals with this all the time. It takes client relationships/deals months, sometimes years, to manifest into a transaction.
My 2cents - 1. either they don't like you enough/you are not their go to, or 2. it's just how they do things/everything there has to go through a long process. Either way, it is not a good sign, particularly #2. Just imagine when your NDA process also takes a month and bids are due in a week...
....wut? The NDA signatory/evaluation process often takes a month... why do you think there's such a long lead time between when a deal is launched and the call for offers date??
Honestly it can really take forever, keep going through the process and eventually something will stick.
If you are interviewing for HFF or JLL, the merger is probably throwing a huge wrench in the hiring process.
