I'm curious - McKinsey vs Goldman Sachs - which has better brand recognition?
For the average Joe (non business/finance people)
1. In USA
2. In Europe
3. In Asia
My impression is that in Europe (except for the UK), McKinsey has better recognition, while in Asia (HK/Singapore/China/India, not sure about the rest), GS does. The deal flow is quite strong in Asia nowadays, while the consulting industry has not caught up with the US/Europe.
Not sure about the US. I guess it's GS? As the media may have been talking about GS a lot post financial crisis (so GS has better brand recognition, but in a bad way).
I'd reckon to say groups 1-3 would all recognize Goldman Sachs before they recognize McKinsey. Not that McKinsey isn't a heavy hitter (in consulting), but they don't necessarily grab headlines per the nature of their work. Investment banking tends to attract more press (good and bad) than consulting firms.

Yeah exactly. No average joe knows hedge fund names or PE firms etc. etc.
Exactly there is a reason why the average Joe earns $40k a year
GS has more recognition than McKinsey, let alone MBB.
If it's for the average Joe GS will be better known but for negative reasons

Probably Goldman but more negatively; based off of the people I've met McKinsey alumni are definitely regarded as more intelligent (for lack of better word) than Goldman alumni
More average joes have heard of CVS or Hooters compared to GS or McKinsey......literally no idea why you'd be asking this question

Idk about international reputation by region but imagine it’s similar to the US.
The Yankees are definitely more prestigious than the Cowboys.
