Naming deals on CV
Quick one for you guys...if you are working on a deal that is ongoing and has been made public via media (e.g. the papers gets a hold of a story that X company is buying y Company and runs with it) is it ok to list x and y company on my resume or must I keep the names confidential?
How does this change if the paper also reports my banks involvement versus if they don't?
I think if it's been made public by the media then it should not be an issue.
I would search the internet first to see if there is any news of your bank being connected to the deal (i.e. XX bank advised on Y and Z). If unable to find then I would keep it at a high level. A client once told us that they did not want us to mention their name when pitching people we had done deals for. I found an article highlighting the deal we did, but there was no mention of us per the client's request...so we tell people we did a deal for a "global financial sponsor".
This.
Look at the buyer's and seller's respective websites to see what their press releases mention. Never disclose non-public information. I am sure that seems obvious, but you would be amazed. Just this past SA recruiting season, one of our sophomore interns disclosed live transaction details in interviews with other banks. We got a call from an MD at another bank and, boom, my MD made sure this kid got no offer from any bank.
Just to clarify I am talking about a situation where neither buy side or sell side has disclosed anything officially but the papers have got hold of it an printed an article on it.
I personally think from a CV perspective it is ok but it could get tricky in an interview where you need to be very careful what you discuss...very easy to talk about a deal and mention something you shouldn't have.
yeah unless you can find any ties in the public domain keep it on a no name basis. any closed or announced deals or aborted deals where news or debtwire or mergermarket for example have picked you up as an advisor are fine to list - always make sure you dont disclose anything int he interview that shouldnt be out there but thats kind of obvious
I agree with packmate and Sil
Do NOT list the information if it is not public (OFFICIALLY) even if it is in the paper. You should not through your actions confirm or deny anything that is not made public through OFFICIAL channels.
I would not list the exact deal. We were informed by the firm that it's not even ok to put deals on our resumes once we're full time analysts. Deal size is even iffy. I think saying industry and a general size range of the deal is best. It's best to keep the exact name of the deal down low. I would be more open in the interview, but if you give the name away, you can't talk about some of the intricacies of the deal.
And regardless, people will know what deal it is 90% of the time even without you knowing the name of it.
Don't disclose the names if you are not 100% sure. It's just not worth the trouble, so play it safe..
Great guys. Gonna keep the names anonymous. Thanks for the input!
Deal from the summer recently announced - what to do on my resume? (Originally Posted: 12/19/2011)
I got to work pretty extensively on this M&A deal (helped put together the greenlight memo, made some of the tabs in the model, helped put together the final approval memo, etc.). After the markets froze up the deal was in limbo, but it finally announced last week.
Currently on my resume it just talks about what I did on this deal (basically just what I said above in the parentheses) without naming any companies or industries or deal sizes. Can I put the name of the company and deal size down on my resume now? Can I also call it "select transaction experience" or something like that?
Would appreciate help from anyone with experience with this kind of stuff.
You can put the details if it has announced. Just be sure that you can speak to deal specifics and that you aren't overstating your contributions.
Basically saying I negotiated the price, made the models and presentations, and closed the deal myself. No big deal.
Just kidding of course.
Writing about Deals on Resume - How much details? (Originally Posted: 02/07/2008)
When you write down your work experience on your resume, I am often told to be specific and provide numbers, % whenever possible.
My question is... providing details to what extent???
Let's say you worked on a sell-side M&A advisory:
1) Do you provide the name of the client you advised, and for how much it was sold to which company etc?
Or, you rather just put down as "advised regional bank on its sale to national bank", something vague like that and save the details for later when you are asked during interview?
2) Do you provide the date you announced/closed the deal?
3) As for "pending" deals, in how much details can you write about on resume?
Thank you!
A good rule of thumb is to treat any unannounced deals like you would teasers.
I write one bullet describing the deal "$X.X billion leveraged buy-out of Company X by Financial sponsor X, where Bank X served as sole buyside advisor and lead bookrunner" then several sub-bullets describing the highlights (not unlike what you'd see in a case study).
If it's unannounced but noteworthy, I stick it in a section underneath called "Select Pending Transactions" and follow the same format, only "$X.X billion leveraged buy-out of publicly traded industrial company..." Most likely no sub-bullets under any of these transactions, because usually those kind of details aren't public, anyways.
I don't include the date of the announcment or the close. If the interviewer really cares that much, they can look it up themselves.
Thank you both for your inputs.
I understand it is not very common for junior analysts to get to both announce and close the deal, and I may be wrong, but I believe companies respect that when they see it on resume?
I would not include the specific dates, but is it worth mentioning that I was actively involved in transaction from start to finish, i.e. both announced and closed?
Thanks.
Sorry, I had to bump this.
Resume Question - Can I put in deal value and name of the firm? (Originally Posted: 12/09/2013)
A deal that I was involved with during the summer recently closed. The bank where I was working is listed. I have already included a general description of the firm on my resume "Leading automotive products manufacturer..." Could I now put the name of the firm and the final deal value? Or just leave the aforementioned description? Thanks.
Was the deal announced publicly? That is, if I did a google search, could I find the names of the companies and deal value? If not, then you probably can't put that info down.
Yes. I just was unsure if I could update my resume to include the names when at the time I was there the deal was not publicly disclosed but has since been announced and closed and the two parties involved as well as the terms have been disclosed.
