If you don't know about Asian parents, they always ask you about your job/money/prestige/etc. Am I the only one who finds these conversations annoying? I can't tell them that I work in Statistical Arbitrage because there's no Chinese words for StatArb. So I tell that I work in finance, and they automatically think that I work as a bank teller or something!!! Then, I tell them that I work in investments, and they think I'm talking about Cash Deposits, and shit!!!
I was telling them about my new place, and I told them that it costs x amount of dollars, and they asked me if i could afford to eat. Retards.

I guess you can't really blame them because they are just not in the field. Bank tellers are the finance people they meet with the most so without knowing what banking is they just assume you are another teller. It is probably the same for a lot of people.

simple- if you want to talk finance, hang out with friends that know finance. e.g. my sister is a doctor and I can't talk to her in medical jargon. on the other hand my best friend is doing a ph.d. in finance and we have some spirited discussions whenever we have lunch.
As for people/parents thinking you are poor/etc, I don't see the downside to that. pay isn't correlated perfectly with respect. e.g. professors, high gov officials, writers, etc etc
I thought stat arb was the province of scientists and mathematicians, no? it is certainly much closer to those fields in terms of analytical and numerical techniques than standard corp fin/M&A/IBD type work.
What kind of work do you do? nonstationary multivariate? (VECMs, structural VARs w/ cointegration, cointegrating rank etc.) or more stationary type stuff (Granger causality, impulse response, variance decompositions etc.)?

yeah qunatum, I'm not sure about your assertion that hot white chicks don't go for Asian guys AT ALL- this might be true in your social circle, especially if you live in the deep South- but in Australia and New Zealand for example, not to mention Hawaii, there are lots of white female/Asian male couples- the major reason is that many Asian people form cliques and tend to hang out together to the exclusion of others- you see this a lot at UCB, UCLA, UCI, UCSD. That being said, there are tons of mixed couples at these schools- I would agree it's probably 75% white guy with Asian girl, but even at 25% that is a lot of people to disprove your blanket statment. And this reflects couples who hold hands in public and all- drunken hookups at the UCs involve people of every race. White girls are like girls in general- they can go for anyone, it often comes down to a guy demonstrating interest or having the courage to ask them out. FWIW, this is hard for all guys.
Also, I think the mismatch in interracial dating is more the fact that Asian girls have a very classical form a femininity that attracts guys of all races- as a group, they probably reach the highest standard of beauty in today's society... hence the prevalence of white guys who go for them. I do agree many Asians in the US have to stop looking up to white/Jewish people. The younger guys on Wall Street are less likely to do this.
Oh yeah, if you went to an ivy like I did, the Asian girls were the hottest students by far so most guys, even if they seldom thought about Asian girls in high school, quickly changed freshman year haha...

It's funny that you brought up the cali schools since I have tons of friends there and have visited berkeley, ucla, ucsb, ucsd, and usc, numerous times. And never have I seen 25% asian guy/white girl couples. They're not common, even in a diverse state like california. And there are VERY few hot white girls who are dating asian guys. My frat buddies would always make fun of asian dudes because they're so lame. They would never do that towards blacks or latinos, but asians are fair game because they're effeminate, weak, and unattractive.
And no, I do not live in the deep south. I live in NYC and have done so for five years.
