Resume Review for MS Grad looking for IB or Corp Strategy (no clever tag, sorry) 1st update 9-24-14

What's up everyone.

I'm gearing up to graduate, and a few recruiters have been calling me about other FP&A roles. I speak with them and let them know my intentions to move into IB.

I have received a call for a Risk Analyst position at a hedge fund (middle office. I'll take what I can get).

However, I want to make my resume look as strong as possible on the off chance I impressing a small investment firm.

I'm looking to get into a nice MBA in a couple years, but for now, I'm going the MS route.

Can yall take a look at the resume? Sorry I dont have some clever quip in the title. Haha.

9-24 UPDATE: aight... here's a second go round.

i have a little more time from school so i'm going to try and attend more networking events.

i've also gained access to the Company DB so i'm going to aim for boutique banks around here in the DFW that have play in the TMT sector and try to play up my corporate finance experience and transition that way...

I don't get it. You want to do another MS after this?

naw... i did the MS in hopes of getting an analyst role since my undergraduate degree wasnt in finance.

i want to get an MBA in case i'm not able to secure something in banking and need to do the career switch, but also to get some formal business education.

I enjoy the school setting, and think an MBA would be a plus for me not only career wise, but personally.

Fair enough.

Few things (just my humble opinion):

  • for MSc - "August 2014 (Expected)" looks better
  • you can put your honours stuff together with GPA (same bullet) to save some space
  • leave BSc GPA bullet off the resume - why would that drag you down? who cares about bachelor GPA if you did masters. it is low anyway...
  • add some more info about basketball, maybe some statistic (can be bs)
  • add more relevant coursework or something (student clubs? etc?) (too much white space right now)
  • add some numbers to f500 experience
  • add some more info to the last bullet f500
  • CFA challenge - 3rd bullet (sub-bullet) is should be moved a bit to the left - looks awkward atm
  • maybe add some numbers to CFA challenge experience as well
  • definitely add numbers to Student Investment Group thing
  • remove CFA level 1 candidate thing (lol srsly..)
  • add some more interests - something that could start a talk during interview or something analytical (basketball analytics or sth..)
  • remove "Men's" from Men's Basketball... you obviously don't play for girls... or? (excuse my ignorance if this is something that must be indicated...)
  • overall add few more meaningful bullets, something that looks technical.. maybe mention functions used in excel, results of some tasks, etc. add some bs if you must

be more proactive - look at other resumes and resume tips instead of waiting for comments which may not come

tbh your resume is pretty average and uninteresting (no offence)

go look for more online tips, check people who already asked for advice on WSO, watch seminars etc.
