Resume Review -- SBs for intelligent advice/revisions

Rising Senior from non-target for FT Analyst recruitment in LA/SF. I have built some contacts but would also like to apply online for some of the lower tier BBs.

SBs for answering the following (honestly and intelligently):
- What revisions would you make?
- Will I get interviews?
- Do I have a shot?

Your GPA is a bit low so what about your major GPA? Is that higher? If so, add it.

Misspelled something in the first bullet point under Investment Banking Summer Analyst

Looks pretty good.

I think it looks pretty good - the one critique I have is that it seems that you're an extremely one-dimensional candidate (the last line feels more like an apology for this than an actual demonstration of well-roundedness). As in, it seems like everything you've done in your life has been a stepping stone to getting an IBD gig. I don't think you'll have a problem getting interviews, but I think you need to be able to show that you have an actual personality and interests outside of finance....also have solid reasons why you want to be in finance.

Network a lot...don't think of "lower BBs" and "higher BBs", it's pretty meaningless in the longer term. Try to get in touch with anyone inside of those banks who you can speak with....an HR recruiter, current analyst, whoever. Tap your alumni network, use LinkedIn...pull out all of the stops. Applying online is basically useless.

Just my 2 cents.

My major GPA is almost identical so figured it wouldn't do any good, SB for the catch.

SB for the advice, but could you elaborate on why I look one dimensional?

I have had other jobs/extracurricular activities but chose to omit them because of the space constraints: - was a property manager for foreclosed/distressed properties in the wake of the 2008 collapse - also Secretary, Risk Manager, IFC Delegate, Parents Weekend Chair, and Ritual Chair for my Fraternity - involved on our Campus' Student Activities Judicial board which tried delinquent organizations

Your resume lost credibility under my eyes once I saw "Valedictorian" associated with a GPA of 3.61 at a non-target. Seriously, the "valedictorian" of your school has a 3.61??

I'd advise taking that off; it'll do you more harm than good.

Impressive. For the first line for your SA, write in a number at the end of the summer - this can be the total of all deals you do any work on, regardless of whether or not they go through or what level of involvment you have. Overall, your resume is pretty strong!

I was 2011 Spring Valedictorian meaning I received a 4.0 this past semester; I want to list that accomplishment, but I agree Spring Valedictorian is a bit misleading, any more thoughts?

Thanks and good call, they will be closing a lot of deals right now too because California is abolishing redevelopment so all the redevelopment agencies are trying to secure debt before the deadline. Just last week I got help finalize the paperwork for a 30mm deal with a certain city, really cool experience, made me realize how fucking cool the work people in IB do is.

I think you're in good shape and definitely have a shot.

One small recommendation with regards to formatting: since you have your job titles on the line below company titles (i.e., "Global Wealth Management Intern" underneath "Merrill Lynch") I think you might want the same with with your leadership and awards section (i.e., put "President Elect" under "Finance _________ Society"). I know this might be difficult to fit if you're already at the bottom of the page, but I think it's good to have the same format throughout if possible. Also, just noticed it would fit better with the formatting used for your education section too.

Cheers and good luck!

Thanks again for the positive reinforcement.

I agree that it would look slightly more uniform, but like you said, there's just no room.

From the other experiences I listed above, would you trade anything out to make my experience look more varied?

SB for the catch, I really want to get into CIB and out of Public Finance; in your opinion would it be smarter to make that transition out of business school instead of trying to compete for CIB right now?

is your current SA gig at a BB? I'd be a little specific about your title...maybe put public finance in their somewhere so recruiters don't assume you are an SA in corp finn.

If you have a opp to interview for a healthcare group in SF I'd shoot for that. I know two guys who landed healthcare PE/VC gigs after 2-3 years as a public finance IB analyst at BBs in their healthcare groups.

FT recruiting can sometimes be group-specific and even if its a generalist offer, Public Finance guys would really want you given ur background. But it depends on the connections u have, if they're in classic IBD groups like M&A, Energy etc then they might push so that you're in that group. Also you can adapt to ur interviews, maybe use the public finance pitch to get in at a GS/JPM and the traditional IBD pitch for other BB's. And also why do u want to do traditional IBD, if you enjoy munis? honestly, it would be easier to pitch public finance to the BB's in ur case.

oldmansacks:
...

No i'm a an intern in Public Finance but 'Investment Banking Summer Analyst' is also true, so if I were to apply for a generalist position, I wouldn't specify, do you agree?

ul8492:
...

If I have the choice i'd pick CIB over PIB 100% of the time. I love IB, it's what I want to do, but the modeling in CIB is much more advanced and the deals interest me much more. The modeling that is done in PIB is mostly done using Munex and doesn't touch financial statements, the things that really interested me in IB in the first place. That being said, if I can apply for Public Finance I would probably do so because the competition is lighter and I have direct experience so like you said might even make it in at GS/JPM/MS.

So I might make two seperate resumes; one with the title Investment Banking Summer Analyst and another with Public Finance Summer Analyst... SB for some elaboration or confirmation on this point. Thanks.

You are missing the 3rd bullet under your education. Cumulative GPA and honors have bullets, and Coursework doesn't. Im surprised no one caught it, because it stands out quite a lot if you look at it really quick without really reading. I agree that you seem too unidimensional. No offense, but if I read this resume I'd think you are a good candidate but a very boring person, so you'd have to show something interesting in your interview otherwise I wouldn't want to work with you. I would shorten the leadership and awards section, since you have good internships that doesn't matter so much, and expand on your interests, specially the pilot and travel through West Africa. I have 2 lines on my resume about traveling and it's something I got asked 100% of the times in interviews and people always liked it, and West Africa is pretty interesting. You can't do that if you have only travelled through Europe/US, so it should give you an edge.

Maximus Decimus Meridius:

Thanks for the catch on that third bullet...not sure why I didn't have that.

No offense taken, i'm here for revisions. Obviously i'm biased, but the main thing I have going for me is probably the fact that i'm not boring (compared with the socially inept coming out of Cal and UCLA)...I just need to get the interviews.

So, I updated my resume (link above) adding separate lines for my Pilot's License and my other interests - SB for follow up on how it looks, thanks.

Yeah, I didn't explain myself I think. You should get interviews, just make sure you talk about something not finance-related there, like being a pilot or Africa, because it's something the interviewer might be concerned about. I think it does look better know with the interests in two separated bullets, and I don't see any typos any more.

Maximus Decimus Meridius:
...

SB, thanks for the advice - I agree that it looks better with the seperated bullets.

I would have included more information about my travel but I really don't have that much to list. I've only been to Cameron and Equitorial Guinea in West Africa because my Uncle was the Ambassador to both countries several years ago; not much else to say aside from describing the trip. As for Central America, I have only been to Costa Rica several times, no extensive travels elsewhere on the continent.

Although, I have also been to France so I guess I could list that I have visited three continents?? What do you think? Good as is?
