Summer Class during SA - Possible?
So I just met with my adviser, and it seems that they have revised my school's liberal arts core requirements somewhat - long story short, I have to take a summer course in order to graduate with all of the stuff I'm after (econ, finance, acct minor, etc.).
That being said, is taking an online summer class through community college (so it should be a breeze) possible during an SA stint?
Thanks for the input.
Think about this question another way, as a FT analyst working in a BB, would you think you have enough time to take a class through a community college. The answer to this question is, most likely not.
A SA does basically the same things under the same schedule as a beginning FT analyst, except they give you less training and you are essentially doing a summer long interview for the FT job. You should keep in mind the long, unpredictable schedule, the fact that you are at the very bottom of the food chain, and that you are trying to get a full time job with this stint.
Yes, it could be done, I wouldn't recommend committing to it until you have some idea of the brain damage they will do to you over the summer.
I'm sure they have a drop date. If it is online, why not enroll and see if you can fit it in? What's the worst that could happen? It is important to remember though that doing a good job at the internship and getting an offer is far more important than a desired minor etc.
Double check with your adviser, but I know at my school you have to complete the graduation requirements that were in place at the year in which you started at the school. Thus, not allowing you to get stuck at that school if the administration began altering the requirements for a consecutive number of years. Just a thought.
are you planning on taking the classes from? I would like the link of the CC because I need to do the same thing. I need to take professional communication and supply chain management, do you know if they have them?
so long as it's online - yes, it definitely is possible. (i did this last summer) it blows, but it can be done.
TO POWERMONKEY - I didn't really think about it that way. I'm not in NYC for the summer (midwest office), so I was thinking I could probably fit in the few hours a week for it- It's a history class, so probably just a few papers I could crank out in my downtime. I also only need a C because the grade doesn't transfer, only the hours do. I may take another posters advice and register, and then drop if I don't have time.
TO CPHBRAVO96 - I don't really NEED to take it, but we just started a "financial analysis" program this year also in addition to the few core changes. Basically, my school is now partnering with CFA Institute, and you can get the designation on your diploma. In order to do this, I would need to take one extra accounting course, and with my full schedule, I think the history course online would be the easiest class to complete over the summer.
TO HOLLYWOOD - I'm taking it through my local community college to save some cash (it's like 100 bucks for the class vs. almost 3 grand at my school). I'm sure you have some CC that you are in-district for that would be the same.
Huh? There is no way you can get the CFA designation sans experience. You must mean L1.
KRAKAUER - Sorry - I guess I need to clarify a little. You're right in the fact that you don't become a charterholder by going through my school's program. However, you get a "financial analysis" designation, which is sponsored by the CFA Institute. Basically, the CFA Institute is recognizing that a specific predesignated finance course schedule covers at least 80% of the material necessary for the CFA level 1 exam. This may not sound like a big deal, but when 85% of your school takes the easiest course-load possible, IMO it's a fairly easy way to distinguish yourself to alumni.
I got a syllabus from last semester to give to my guidance office. The course will be 6 essays and a paper, and all of the various choice of topics are included in the syllabus. So as long as I can get the professor to email me the new syllabus as soon as he gets it done, I'm pretty sure I'll be able to work through it in a couple of days.
If you don't have to "attend" some sort of online classes/chats or whatever, and you really want to be reading and writing papers and doing other homework starting at midnight when you have to wake up again at 7 the next day, then feel free. You should really probably pass on this class. If you are working for a BB you are probably going to work a whole lot of hours - even moreso than a regular FT analyst. I was the last person to leave the office every night except for 4 or 5 last summer.
I'd do a Maymester. You should easily be able to find one at a local community college.
That way, you won't have to worry about it interfering with your SA stint.
