The A-Rod debacle, what would you do?
So the "apology" letter came out today. Funny how the Yanks denied him to give a press conference at their spring training facilities (though did give permission for him to do it at Yankee stadium).
If you owned the Yankees, what would you do with A-Rod? He's due to hit a lot of incentives soon (assuming he is actually playing and performing well, I believe Mays' 660 homeruns is the next milestone he would hit and would receive $6mm).
Buy out his contract and never let him play?
Treat him like crap and hope he slowly fades away?
Accept his apology and see if he can earn his spot back based on his play?
I know they're trying to appeal to remove the incentives left in his contract but legally I dont think there is any way they can get out of this, correct?
What's the best strategic move here for the Yankees? For A-Rod?
Their actions should be based on ROI, nothing else. Whether he's there or not won't have a material effect on ticket and merchandise sales for the franchise. If they can evaluate the post-steroid A-Rod and see that the talent is essential for their success, retain him. If he's only Yankee caliber on roids (especially at his age), figure out a way to have the money they are contractually liable for affect the club in the least way possible. I think he's a douche, but there aren't a lot of superstars during the 90s and 2000s in the MLB that were steroid-free. I would think Ken Griffey, Jr. would be one of the few.
They did give him the opportunity to apologize at Yankee Stadium, but apparently he wants to focus on baseball the next time he's at YS.
Dude's had a rough year, GF dumps him, Yanks looking at every avenue to not pay some of his incentives. You sort of feel bad for the guy but then you remember what he did.
I don't know what the Yankees will do, but as a fan, I cannot wait until 2017.
I heard a rumor about a month or two ago that they were looking at the possibility of trading him straight up for Ryan Howard. An exchange of awful players/contracts but at least a change of scenery for both.
Here is a question I have pondered over, would you rather have Griffey Jr steroid free like he more than like was or Jr on roids but he didn't miss all his prime years with the Reds....... I truthfully can't decide but I think its pretty safe to say if he used roids like everybody else he would not have missed all that time and become basically a shell of former self by age 30.
On the one hand I would love to see the damage Griffey could have done on the juice, guy would have been nuts behind the plate -- I don't think Bonds/Sosa/McGuire would have had a chance at the single season record. On the other, it's pretty awesome to think about the fact that he may have done all that juice free -- if that's really case. I prefer the latter.
Who gives a shit about clean vs dirty. The name of the game is money. If you have to be dirty to get paid you get dirty.
Now as for what the Yanks can do. They send him to the farm teams, might as well drum up ticket sales there.
I actually really like this idea. Bust him down to single-A. At worst, it'll drum up ticket sales; at best, he'll retire and not be owed any additional money.
Agreed with the above that the Yankees will sell-out with or without A-Rod, and with or without him performing well for the Yankees. So financially, I say demote him so far down that he will retire of his own accord; if he doesn't retire, then he's probably drumming up some ticket sales for the A Nobodycares.
I don't mean to be a dick. But you clearly know nothing about Major League Baseball and contracts and union negotiations. You can't just "send a player to the minors." It doesn't work that way for a near 20-year veteran. They have a limited number of options and he would have to A) accept his DFA, and B) pass through waivers untouched which would not happen.
You let A-Rod play. You can't have a guy being paid all that money and just have him sit on the bench. With or without steroids, the guy had talent. Might as well put him out there. If he plays well, then the team benefits and you have to pay him for his milestones. Its the only name the Yankees have this year. CC will be a shell of himself if he makes it through a season. Tanaka's arm is going to blow up by july, and Tex is a sad sad story.
Sigh.
Let A-Rod play, he's still good. If he's still crap, trade him by the deadline. Get some young players and build a legit 2018 World Series type team. And for the love of God no more old bats, we need young pitching.
People still watch baseball?
I've been watching Baseball since I was in pampers. Back in the day when ATL and the Mets were relevant, good games. My AL team is NYY and NL team is ATL.
.
Such a fugazi thing to say
What do you watch, soccer? Lol
They sure do. It was a top 3 most-watched program in 17 markets and the most-watched in 11 of those markets last year.

Given they have Headley I hope the most AROID ever sees is DH duty. The sons are a different animal than George was, so I think AROID will be on the team for the remaining portion of his contract. I have zero doubt the Yankees will fight like hell to not pay those HR bonuses.
Who cares, just another dancing monkey
There's no decison to be made. Of the three strategies that you listed, the first two are off the table - not even remote options. They do just what theyre doing and go with the third. Fight the incentives, run him out there in spring training, hope for the best, and see what he's got. If he can produce, play him. If he can't even prove to be able to physically play, collect what you can insurance-wise.
the first one is an (unlikley) possibility. in theory they could pay all his ~60mm remaining owed, move on and cut their losses. he never sets foot on the field, they never have to pay the potential incentives, and people forget about arod/yankees very soon.
George Steinbrenner wouldve had the balls to make a move like this imo
I think the entire thing is just fucking stupid. So what if he used PED's? Who cares? They shouldn't be illegal in the first place. The amount of players on PED's would destroy the leagues if it came out. I don't care that he's on PED's, especially given how well he plays.
He's been in the majors for more than 5 years, which means that he cannot be demoted on an optional assignment to the minors without his consent. They can release him, but what's the point? They'll still need to pay him.
Trade A-rod? He's also got 10-5 rights. Which means that he needs to approve any trade (regardless, I think he's got a no trade clause). Even if you do convince him to leave, What MLB team wants to deal with that drama?
