My goal is to secure a position in corporate development and strategy in a media company.

Form my research, they all require financial modeling and advanced excel skills.

I have a month to teach these to myself. I was wondering if you can help me out and tell me the top 5 topics I would need/they would ask in an interview for a position at a company...not a equity research firm or investment bank.

Also, if anyone has anymore info on these types of positions I would appreciate it.

If you're serious about the media/entertainment business, you need to study the legendary pioneers, as with any industry. Know what drives them, what makes them tick - that's how you will discover what it takes to be great, and you will blow people away in interviews.

Swagon, good job completely not answering this kids question.

To OP:

  • You should know the 3 financial statements and how they link, you should be able to model all 3 (linked) financial statements in Excel.
*Questions regarding the financial statements may be exactly that, how do they link? How does a 1M loan hit the balance sheet? The CF statement? The income statement? etc... you should obviously know the 3 types of CFs.
  • You should be able to do a discounted cash flow valuation. Its pretty straightforward. Know how to determine the discount rate and WACC. Make sure you understand the 'cost of capital' concept and how it impacts investment/biz dev decisions.
  • Since its easy to do, you might as well know how to do a comparable company valuation too. Don't forget the control premium and know why its necessary.
  • Know the concept of accretion/dilution. Maybe be able to model it.

Look at major deals such as film slates (e.g. Marvel's revolving facility with ML before its acqusition by Disney), as well as anything you can find on monte carlo applications in film finance
