What are the top tech-focused funds in NY? I know most of the tech investors sit on the WC but I'm curious to learn if there are tech-focused opportunities in NY for a WC-based Tech IB Analyst at a non GS, MS, Q group (think EVR, LAZ, BofA, Citi, CS). Thanks!
Stripes/Lead Edge Capital are smaller but really good since they have had a longer presence in NYC.
Up and coming growth funds like Apax Digital, Level Equity, etc are solid. Honestly can’t go wrong with the growth style investing with most of the nyc shops.
Agreed with the caveat that Apax Digital and Level Equity are very very different. Level is more of the Stripes/Lead Edge pure play mid-sized growth shop (I work at another one of these) while Apax Digital is the growth arm of a megafund. Comp/Fundraising Ability/WLB are likely vastly different. It'd be like saying "KKR growth and SGE"
Some of the names mentioned above come to mind. Other names include Silver Lake (West Coast based but have NYC office), H&F (West Coast based but have NYC office, do a lot of software/tech but play in other industries), Siris (impressive growth trajectory), Welsh Carson (tech as well as healthcare), and New Mountain (do a good amount of HCIT). There are a bunch of generalist funds / others that have technology groups (e.g., Warburg).
Thank you this is all very helpful! How difficult is it to land a spot at one of these funds in the NY office as a west coast based analyst? I understand HH conversations might be more challenging but overall, are there any specific nuances to the process?
The struggle used to be on-cycle recruiting since you’d need to quickly book a ticket to fly into NYC for the gauntlet of interviews with little to no warning unless a HH tips you off early. Now with COVID and Zoom this might be less of an issue
What’s up with silver lakes NY office? I heard it plays second fiddle to menlo. Honestly I hate SF so I wouldn’t go there even if I was offered a shot at KKR menlo but some of these tech PE funds are just dominating right now so it’s hard not to look
Another name I've been hearing more about is Apax Partners (think they have a tech buyout team as well as the growth equity Apax Digital arm). Dealt with them when I was still in IB and thought they were generally nice to work with.

What is Stripes reputation like?
GA/Insight are larger players.

Insight, General Atlantic, Stripes, Blackstone, KKR, SGE, Goldman, Raine Group, Level, Declaration, SoftBank, TA Associates
Why is Lead Edge not included? They’re quite lean it seems ($3b and less than 20 people) and made some good investments.
tell me that u work at lead edge w/o working at lead edge lmao
Does tiger global count for this?
There's nothing that Tiger isn't anymore

For pure growth equity, not buyout: INSIGHT!
