UK Business Schools: Cass vs Imperial vs Warwick
I am an engineering final year student and I always wanted to work in a Management Consultancy. I decided to pursue a MSc in Management to change my career path from Engineering. Since I applied really late(April'2012) most schools in Europe were almost done with their this years enrollment.
However I have offers from the following schools:
Warwick, Cass, Grenoble,Edinburgh and Strathclyde. I am on the reserve list for LSE(as their class was full but my application was strong so they have put me on a reserve list)
I am waiting to hear from Imperial and Rotterdam.
While the FT Times ranks Grenoble really high, I am not sure if its a good course. Cass is ranked as the third best in UK but I have always seen people saying Warwick is a more reputed business school. I have to pay my deposit at Cass by June 1 and I am really confused. Cass has great networking links and they have already started to send me CV tips, linkedIn Alumni Networking Groups etc. Cass also costs 6000 pounds cheaper than the Warwick Course. And the career fairs at Cass are highly popular.
Please help me with the pro's and con's of each school. Specially considering that I need a school that will help me network in the management consultancy field!
Cass>Warwick
I have a couple of friends that went to Cass and they all got offers before graduation. Though, they were all in M&A, S&T, biz.dev. and one in tech consulting (Accenture).
Only one buddy that went to Warwick and he started his own company due to lack of job offerings.
Did your friends in Cass and Warwick studying the Masters in Management Programme or some other programme?
Thanks!
Yes. Out of the guys I know that went to Cass, three attended the MiM program and same with the buddy at Warwick.
how is manchester business school viewed by you folks?
Well in my opinion for Masters in Management: LBS --gap-- LSE --gap-- Imperial Cass/Warwick or Warwick/Cass --gap--- Manchester Edinburgh ---gap-- strathclyde durham aston bradford
You can probably forget about LSE, I speak from experience here. if its Cass vs Warwick, you maight wanna consider locations as well. If you do get the chance to attend Imperial, I would strongly suggest you do so.
^Were you reserve listed at LSE as well? When did you hear from them about your final result.
Yes if i go by locations, Cass does have the London Advantage. They are very regular in networking events and organizing career fairs.
The FT rankings gives number 1 rank in the world to cass for careers for their MiM programmes.
Do you think FT is a credible source?
The got back to me sometime in August I think. Very late to say the least.
As of yesterday Cass was ranked 2nd to Oxford in UK Business management rankings
You refer to these rankings: http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/table/2012/may/22/university-guide-…
I just googled them and saw them! Thanks a lot :)
This is just another bullshit ranking..
And in the end were you successful with your application at LSE?
What course/school did you finally end up doing?
Is it worth to take a loan? (Imperial, Cass, Warwick) (Originally Posted: 01/07/2015)
Hi there,
I am about to finish my bachelor's degree and I am going to apply for masters. Where I'm from there are many "good" universities to apply to.. but there is actually only one school that's good enough a career within finance (and is on the FT's ranking list). BUT that school requires me to score 700+ in GMAT before a certain date, which I won't be able to achieve yet of reasons that I won't get into detail with now.
So I am thinking that either I'll wait until next year, and I'll get the gmat scoor I need until then. Or I'll move to London and pay 29,000£ for an MSc with Cass, Imperial or Warwick..So what I ask you guys is; Is it worth the money? I'm asking this because in my country I don't have to pay anything.
I knoow, I know, many of you willl say "of course it is".. but in this case, I could wait another year and get my master's for free (If I get admitted, which actually is not guaranteed).
In other words, do you actually get that well paid after finishing masters on any of these schools? My goal is to work as an analyst within Markets division, perhaps equity research, or sales/trading...
Sorry for a messy topic, But I hope someone could give me some feedback on my thoughts.
/Anton
From what I understand you won't get paid more simply for having a masters. I wouldn't take a masters unless you use it as an opportunity to get a summer internship before it starts (functions like a normal summer internship). if you dont have any work experience before you start it, i probably wouldnt do it. Instead would focus on getting post grad internship somewhere.
In terms of taking out loan - Imperial - Maybe, CASS - No, Warwick - Maybe. Its a lot of money. Can't you go to a German / Swiss / Scandinavian / Dutch target uni for Masters? think those are like £3-4k
good luck.
Thank you very much for your feedback. Appreciate it.
The reason why I want to get a master is because I think that I'll become more competitive in the job market if I do. Also, I will obtain my Bachelor degree this month already, and I haven't managed to get an internship yet. So I don't think I will get a job within Markets anytime soon.. have been on interviews.. Regarding the graduate internships I thought they were only ment for masters students?
I think CBS is one of the best options appart from the UK ones, (of those GMAT free ones). I will definitely look in to that.
look at Rotterdam. You only need a 650 (or 600?) for that.
Thanks Zewa, Rotterdam seems nice, but I'm currently looking for totally GMAT free alternatives atm.
But I might be able o do GMAT in February... That'll be to late for SSE which was my primary choice and free from tuition fees.. But sure, it would open up som doors, including roterdam.
So, to sum up the best choices so faar.
No (or low) fees, No gmat •CBS
High fees, No gmat •Warwick •Imperial
No (or low) fees, gmat •SSE (to late for gmat) •St.gallen •Rotterdam
Also I know that there are very good exchange possibilities with CBS (including schools such as NYU Stern, Columbia, LSE, Boccini, SSE, oxford and
..more
Hey guys i am in the same position!
I already got accepted at the RSM, but I am think about applying to some schools in london.
Imperial - finance LSE - AccFin
What about UCL?
Would you recommend to take loan? I could afford like 20 k pounds and would need a loan of ca 10 k.
Taff choice!
Oh, and also, anyone who knows how easy/difficult it is to get a scholarship? Is it really that hard?

Dont do CASS. That'll be a waste of your money.
I have no interest in going to Cass but I'm interested in why you'd recommend this?
I've always heard mixed reviews about Cass.
Tuition + COL of London make it very expensive and the school's reputation is not nearly enough to compensate for the cost. Within the UK it ranks (far) below the likes of OxBridge, LSE, Imperial, etc. and outside of the UK people have never even heard of this school. Placement is also not even close to the schools mentioned above. I'd personally also pick Warwick or Edinburgh over Cass. Cass derives most of its 'value' from being in London. Other than that it is not at all a school that would warrant such a hefty price-tag.
Okay two people have now discouraged me to take a loan to go to Cass master's.
Could you briefly explain why? :)

I actually have a friend in a similar position and I advised him agains the loan + UK masters option. In my opinion, going to the UK makes sense only if you justify your decision based on any, or a combination of the following: wanting to study abroad/learning english/being close to some relative or gf... What I mean is that in terms of the quality of the education you will recieve the money is def not worth it.
If you are thinking that it will help you with placement I also think it is overrated for continental Europeans. UK offices need Italians, Spanish, French, Germans because they i) speak the language ii) know the their market/culture iii) might even have a network in their country. Who better than these guys to become bankers to the companies from their respective countries? So, when they look for candidates like this, where do you think they go to find them? Bocconi, ESADE, HEC....
Also, when thinking about doing a msc in the UK you should not only look at the fees, but also the cost of living in London (Imperial, LSE...) vs living in Italy/Spain/Germany/France...
My 2 cents anyway...
Thank you very much for your feedback. Interesting view. I believe you are right when you write about that UK offices need people from different countries. Since I am from Scandinavia SSE would be the right choice, but It's to late to do the GMAT for them now, so CBS would hence be the choice for me.

But your masters will give you more time as a student to get internships
Very interesting posts folks. appreciate that you have shared your thoughts about this..

Hia Dante, im in the exactly same position as you are. Im working on my application for CBS atm and im not quite sure which courses i should prioritize on my application. What are youre thoughts on the different programs at cbs?
My friend is doing the Applied Economics and Finance. He says it's a pretty decent course. CBS also has a new master which is called Finance and Investments. Looks like a good course as well but havent heard anything about it
Hey man! I'll send you a pm about that soon :)
