What Briefcase are you using?
Hey guys,
So I've decided that it's time to ditch the backpack upon request from a colleague.
I am taking a looking at briefcases and my associate recommended a Tumi but I don't have 300-400 to shell out and don't want to buy second hand from ebay to find out it's a fake.
What are some affordable options 100-200 range?
Tumi seems like an overpriced luxury brand and the Alpha 2 costs over 400 brand new. I'm not inclined to drop that kind of cash especially after my bonus was taxed so heavily and I've resorted to only eating what I can expense.
I own and still continue to use a Trapper Keeper.
Are you in 3rd grade?
Are you not?
I bought a black large Pollini in Milan as well as a light tan smaller Boggi briefcase in Milan in 2006 before my first position after college.
Both have weathered well.
the fuck are you boyyos even carrying around?
I bought a Tumi. Will have to postpone seeing my parents over Christmas.
There's still time to take it back! I bought a Samsonite over the summer and have really liked it (obviously time will tell on the durability, but is good leather so I imagine it will do well). And I know it doesn't really mean much, but Samsonite bought Tumi so that gave me an extra reason - beyond $500+ price difference - to pull the trigger on this one.
Also, giving me some more comfort is the fact that it appears to be sold out. So this looks like basically the same thing I have ($150 on sale now). And this is a smaller option for $100.
I had a samsonite bag once, and tbh it was kinda cheaply made. The shoulder strap broke after a year, despite me never filling the bag with more than moderate loads (e.g. two books and a laptop).
I have had my Tumi for for years now. I am pretty hard on my bags, but the Alpha has held up shockingly well. So far, I have only had to have one of the zippers replaced (which they did in the store in
If you're on a budget then I'd go check out the outlets if you have any near you, Nordstrom Rack, or Marshalls/TJ Maxx. I've seen some nice looking designer brand briefcases at great prices.
I just got a Tumi Sawyer. I had sent my Alpha in for a zipper repair after about 3.5 years of use and after a month or so I called them up to check the status and they gave me a $550 gift card as store credit since the part needed for repair was on backorder.
Went into the Tumi store and after about an hour of looking at the different bags I kept coming back to the Sawyer and I said f*ck it, I worked hard this year and should reward myself :) Put a few hundred on top of the gift card and walked out with a new bag. I like it. It's simple, and looks great.
I got a Tumi Alpha at Nordstrom Rack for like 30% of retail. Research indicated that they tend to get older models, not cheaper outlet-specific stuff from Tumi. Definitely worth checking out.
Daniels Briefcase
How are you liking yours? I've been very tempted to jump on one for xmas
I got mine through the morning brew discount so it was $120 I think. It holds up well. I have walked with it in the rain and the leather hasn't been affected which is nice considering it isn't top notch leather. Obviously a starter bag. Would recommend for a younger person.

What's your opinion ? Which brief makes the best style ? Are you going to Louis Vuitton for the Porte-Documents Voyage style in rich, natural-hued Nomade leather that will set you back $2420 ? http://www.louisvuitton.com/front/#/eng_US/Collections/Men/Mens-Bags/pr…
I'll stick to T-Tech Forge (Tumi) ($225)

Love it or hate it, I'll always be a backpack guy.
But I do own a Tumi briefcase for any important occasions. It's high quality but obviously with a high price tag.
I would love the Louis Vuitton one but can't afford it yet.
Considering my analyst uses a backback, I think a LV bag might not be appropriate...
I have a LL Bean bag from college (http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/46078?feat=49402-ppxs&dds=y ) that I picked up for $60 lightly used. It's good enough for most purposes.
I also have some terrible samsonite bag I've been using forever. It's fake leather, so it can take snow / rain all day.
Coach makes a nice messenger bag, got mine on sale, only ~$400, all leather, looks very nice
I second this. I got a nice all leather darkish brown messenger bag from Coach for ~$300

I have a Mulberry as well. I think mine is the Chiltern. I only really use it while traveling, as I also have a document folio I can bring to meetings if I need to protect some docs or my iPad from the rain.
In retrospect, it was a stupid purchase. It was pretty expensive, and I rarely use it.
Just carry one of those brown plastic CVS bags. No one will f*ck with you again.
I just carry my briefcase and if it is cold I wear a black ski mask with my black suit. No one f*cks with me either.
I like that.
Frye soft-sided briefcase. Looks better every year.
Tumi Mission Harrison slim leather briefcase. I like the minimalist feel.
Just bought a Coach one as an early Christmas present. holds my laptop and charger and a few other essentials. Leather quality is great. Paid about $400. Lets see if it lasts
Coach as well, have had it for about a year now. Everyday to the office, and bi-weekly on international trips. Takes a beating. Leather and stitching holding up very well.
no brief case...use either my laptop bag or a backpack
Truth is, if you want a good-looking, quality briefcase from a reputable place, you'll most likely have to pay up for it unless you go to an outlet or buy second hand.
As far as non-outlet briefcases go, I like the Tumi Anderson Commuter Brief. It was just on sale for 20% off the $315 price, but not sure if you can still find the deal. I own it in Hickory, and it's pretty dope. Should hold up better than leather.
Non-Tumi, I really like the Hartmann Heritage Double Compartment Brief. Have had it for a year and it's a very good-looking, solid brief (IMHO). Luggagepros appears to have a 30% discount on it.
If you want the best bang for your buck, go to a Tumi outlet and buy an Alpha.
Filson or King Ranch.
Ted Baker Leather Bag
Personally, I have something like this one: Gucci
Not bad.
I have one in their line as well. I typically only carry it to important meetings on the West Coast. I always get good remarks from the Silicon Valley people on this bag.
Obviously, I only bring this bag to VC meetings in the Valley when I cruise into the room in PJs to pitch them for seed funding.

Makes a statement, yes?
Lol. Don't think it will work with Asian bosses and clients. Most Asian offices prefer muted black color without any logos. Maybe it is an Asian things. Similar with watches, loud (rose gold color) are told to be shunned. So are the shoes.
I've had the Grant briefcase from Jack Spade for three years now and it's gotten me numerous compliments from peers and MDs alike. I have it in dark green to be a little different but the black is equally sleek. As a plus, it does an excellent job of holding my stuff.
it's $400 but I got it on sale from Gilt (the link will give you $25 off disclaimer it's my referral code) for $200.
The folks above are right on the money; you can't go wrong with Filson but they are more expensive (but also on Gilt a lot!)
Bottom line: always go leather; never go backpack; always go for smaller and carry fewer things than being that guy with the leviathan
A friend recommended Marlando to me and I purchased a single buckle brief case (I think its called the traveler).

No real complaints so far.
I always feel like briefcase is one of those things you should not over do...personally I would just go with a practical one like the ones from Tumi. If you really want a bit style and fine leather, I would recommend Montblanc or even some (Note: some means not all) Ferragamo; beautifully made yet low-key enough to be professional.
I would advice against some LV/Gucci/Burberry briefs for obvious reasons. You really can't take one seriously when he is carrying a overwhelmingly styled case.
