Is my friend lying about his compensation?
One of my friends last year got a job with Morgan Stanley's private equity team in or near Philly. He didn't even have a BB internship but got into MS, and that's great for him, but all of the guys told me that he said he'd be making $150k. Now I understand that with a nice bonus this is possible, but this guy was telling people he was making $150k as in it was guaranteed in the bank, a salary. This strikes me as pure BS unless I'm totally off base. I was under the impression that even a job like that would pay no more than around 70-80k to an analyst out of undergrad (salary). What is an accurate salary and bonus for typical first year analysts in PE?
As a side note, I'm starting in capital markets at a BB. I'll tell my close friends what my salary and signing bonus is and then I add on that I'll be making a bonus that can range in value, but I definitely don't tell people "Oh yeah, for sure I'll be making over 100k" because it's not certain.
Why are you telling people how much money you make?
Everyone is. I know I think it's weird, these are mostly people who are working in the industry who just want to compare to see if they've gotten screwed. Comp is pretty standard so it's not a big secret. They're all pretty much the same. Once I start working I'm no longer going to tell people since I think it's improper once you're differentiated.

Who care about how much he makes (or whether he is BS-ing about this)? This shouldn't bother you. People on the street can easily make an educated guess on how much someone make based on their firm, their group and their rank.
I'm curious as to typical salary and comp for PE analysts out of undergrad. He's also bragging about his comp to others.

I cannot verify salaries or anything, but I would imagine he is lying. Either way who cares. If he is telling people his salary he is most likely lying or insecure.
^^ Thanks, that's what I've been told. I think I framed the question in the wrong way - I'm not upset or anything if he isn't giving accurate comp, it's more that I'm just curious at to what the comp is for this type of PE job right out of college.
