If you were trying to infiltrate a square castle surrounded by a moat 10 feet wide and you only had two wooden planks 8 feet long, how would you cross the moat?

manbearpig: One plank
One plank diagonally across a corner, and then another from that plank to the castle wall.
You can get at most 8/2 + 8 = 12 feet out of this and the diagonal is 10*sqrt(2) ~ 14.1 feet long.

I think the question is wrong, because what dm818 said is also true. I don't think this works with 8ft planks. I've heard this riddle before with 9.5ft planks and the solution I proposed is the correct one in that case.

It works if you cut a corner, then walk on the plank and place the other plank

What does this mean?
its hard for me to explain
its hard for me to explain without drawing it or showing it but if youre standing at one of the corners, create a triangle with one of the planks....(so if you're standing on the southwest corner, one side of the triangle is south, the other is west, and the final one is the plank) then you walk on the plank and place the other plank to the corner of the castle (essentially you create a T with the planks)

Yeah, this gets you 12 feet. This is what I was originally proposing. But the corner is over 14 feet across. It works with 9.5 foot planks like the original problem. It's impossible with 8 foot planks.
