Like most companies, KKR has three interview stages. However, there are instances where the interviewee had more or even fewer rounds.
Usually, these are the interview stages:
- Hirevue Interview
- One on One Interviews
- Human Resources Interview
Before the three rounds of interviews, you’ll have to complete a few aptitude tests. There are several assessments that KKR requires its candidates to take. In most cases, it would depend on the role or division you’re applying to work for.
The most common tests that candidates will have to take are:
- IQ or Intelligence Test
- Personality test
- Skills test
After the tests, you’re going to have a Hirevue Interview, which consists of behavioral questions and hypothetical situations. To better prepare for this interview, WSO has a guide that goes into detail about the process.
As for the one-on-one interviews, you may have to do a few of those. These interviews consist of the general questions you’d expect, such as, ‘Walk me through your resume’ or ‘Tell me about yourself.’
In addition to these questions, you’ll be met with a few financial brain teasers and then some behavioral ones. There are instances where you may be given a case study that you’ll have to prepare and present.
Preparing For The KKR Interview Process
We get it; preparing for an interview can be an overwhelming experience. However, as we know, studying and practicing are extremely important if you want to get through the various interview rounds, especially for the technicals.
Aside from studying, there are a few other things you can do to better prepare for the interviews that are almost entirely behavioral. In fact, by implementing some of these things, you can stand out as a candidate and be remembered by the interviewer, which is always a good thing.
Yes, preparation is key. But take your time when preparing for your interviews. It is stressful, but if you’re able to create a plan, then the whole process will feel less stressful.
In the following sections, we will share and discuss some tips that may help you prepare for your interview. Most of them don’t require much effort, yet they still make an impact.
Have Your Resume Ready
During the HR interview, or for any interview where you have to meet in person, it is advised that you have a few copies of your resume on hand.
Although the interviewer has already seen your resumé or even browsed through your LinkedIn, it’s highly unlikely that they’ll remember all the information. This is why you should bring a few copies of your resume to refresh the interviewer’s memory.
In addition to this, bringing the extra copies will show that you’re prepared for the interview. It is recommended that you bring about two to three copies of your resume to your meeting.
Since KKR is known for being a private equity firm, it is suggested that you adjust your resume to match the sector’s guidelines. WSO has some helpful resources on its website, along with a private equity resumé template if you want to make some changes to your resumé.
Make A Good Impression During Your KKR Interview
While your achievements and experiences are part of the reason you got the interview, it’s the impression you make during this interview - along with how well you can answer the questions - that will determine if you’ll move forward in the process.
The British School of Excellence has noted seven key steps that you can take to ensure you make a memorable first impression. These are:
- Smile
Be authentic, and let your smile represent that.
- Make and maintain eye contact
Don’t glare into your interviewer’s eyes; instead, just maintain regular eye contact.
- Work on your greeting
A firm handshake should do the trick.
- Personal presentation
Ensure that you’re dressed appropriately for an office.
- Have a positive body language
Stand and sit up straight, and avoid crossing your arms.
- Be punctual
Respect your interviewer’s time and arrive at the meeting on time.
- Maintain a positive attitude
Actively listen to your interviewer and be confident.
Ask Questions
At the end of the interview, you’ll be asked, “Do you have any questions for me?”. If you say that you don’t have any questions, then there’s a chance that you aren’t going to move forward with the interview.
Asking your interviewer questions is one way you show interest in not only the position but also in the company. Additionally, this can help you make a memorable impression, thus standing out as a candidate.
There are several topics you can ask about, but if you’re lost on what to ask, here are some examples:
- Can you describe what your working culture is like?
- What do you find challenging about working at KKR?
- What does a typical day look like in this role?
- Do you have any questions regarding my experiences?
- How do you define success in the role?
- What am I expected to achieve within the next 3 months/6 months/12 months?
Research KKR
Since you’ve decided to apply to KKR, you should have a general idea about the company. Unfortunately, some people apply to companies regardless of the company’s morals or values. This is just reality. People want jobs.
However, during the interviews, you may be presented with several questions about the firm. Some examples of these are:
- Why would you like to work at this firm?
- How do your values align with the company?
- What is one of our company’s recent achievements? What do you think of it?
Having some insight into the company is always a plus because it tells your interviewer that you are genuinely interested in the firm and even the position you’re applying for.
If you don’t know much about the company, that is okay. Try to learn more about it in the days leading up to your interview. There is a strong chance that your interviewer will be impressed.
Study!
For any finance interview, the technicals are an important area to focus on when studying. However, it is helpful to know what type of questions you should study for.
At KKR, the questions are asked to challenge you mentally and see how well you can think on your feet. For example, you may be asked a series of behavioral questions, and then the interviewer may switch gears and ask some technical questions.
Don’t get caught off guard when the direction of the interview suddenly changes. Just be prepared for anything.
As for the type of questions you can expect, KKR tends to ask a lot of accounting-based questions. And so, brush up on your accounting knowledge so you’ll be prepared when faced with technical questions.
On the other hand, the behavioral questions you’ll be asked are mostly likely situational circumstance questions. Aside from that, there will be the typical “Why would you like to work at KKR” or “Tell me about yourself”.
