Advice on how to speed up offer/interview process?
Going through the interview process with a couple companies right now, all at different stages. Trying to get some of them to speed up the process, but also want to tread carefully because at least 2/3 are great companies and the pay would be a hefty bump. Also kind of trying to get out before returning to office with my current job. I have told them I am interviewing elsewhere and could be receiving an offer soon (already rejected an offer elsewhere I didn’t want a little while back). Is there anything else I can really do, it’s really frustrating how slow some of these companies move, and how different the pace is by company. I’ve had interview processes get done in under a month and some that have lasted months on end. Any advice would be really helpful and appreciated.
So I am in the same boat. Don't want to return to my current employer, and need something new before October. I am shortlisted at three banks, with healthy competition on all roles (up to six candidates per role per firm).
I guess the only thing you could do is ask for the first/early interview spots, instead of the last ones. Saying you may work elsewhere might work if that specific BU needs many people.
The other thing you could do is ask for a different interview structure, where many people are interviewing you in one session instead of spreading them out several days.
I am doing that with bank 1, single stage interview with three execs.
That makes sense and I appreciate the response. I keep trying to make it clear that once WFH ends interviewing will be damn near impossible. One company has taken over a month to get through just the first round of the process because they are focused on hiring a VP and an MD or something like that. Totally understand and it makes sense, but I just do not have time to wait while I am interviewing elsewhere and going back to office soon. Worst part is they are my top choice and I really hope I don’t get into a situation where I get offers elsewhere and have to make a decision to reject them and gamble on myself while this company takes it’s sweet time, or accept a slightly lower offer knowing I possibly could have gotten the one I really really wanted.
If you are young or still starting in your career (you don't sound like in your late 30s or 40s), I wouldn't push too much. All the banks that rejected me or didn't hire me earlier in my career all came back later in my life. Just because you don't end up there next week doesn't mean you will never work there.
HR has processes they follow, and they do it for reasons they deem important. So, at the end of the day, there is only so much you can do.
but since we are all WFH still, I think they should show some level of flexibility. the managers are sitting in a home office...
Yeah just in my early 20’s. And totally understand. The frustrating part is without a doubt the lack of flexibility, hopefully the speed/flexibility picks up soon.
If flexible, open minded, out of the box thinkers are relevant to you - then ideally don't work for a bank. A startup or a younger firm would be a better fit.
Among all the personality traits that come to mind in banking, flexibility isn't one of them... and I worked for many banks.
Also given the fact that I’m at my first job out of school (been here about a year and a half) I’ve never even interviewed while working at a job in office and not entirely sure how that would even work. I would guess taking PTO/half days but that sounds like such a hassle. The WFH format is ideal when looking elsewhere, just another reason I want to get this done and just get an answer from them.
In all honesty, I book a meeting room and interview while I am working. won't steel hours from my employer, and will work longer or on weekends. But if I need 1 hour personal time I will block it and book a room. End of story.
If the other bank is nearby on the street or in E14, then I will arrange a lunch time interview and walk across. Isle of dogs is perfect for that.
