Breaking into Asset Management from Investment Banking
*I already posted this in another thread, but figured I would start a discussion to get more help since I am really stuck at the moment
How realistic are my chances of breaking into AM?
I’d say I have a pretty non-traditional background. Grew up in Asia (think Southeast Asian countries like Indonesia/VN/Malaysia), studied abroad and got my degree in Australia, and then worked for 2 years in IB in my home country - advising mostly M&A in the region. After working in IB for a while, I figure it wasn't really a thing for me - I like investing and following the markets more. So I decided to pivot to AM.
I recently moved to the US, so I didn't have the chance to do local internships (which feels like a huge gatekeeper here, either you intern and get a return offer, or you're out). People also seem a bit conservative when they know I don't have direct US market experience.
Are there any realistic pathways that can get me into AM (without having to get a Masters)? I know it wouldn't be a straight line into AM given my background, but I would be more than happy to do related things to get into AM later on in my career.
Consider sell side ER as a potentially easier transition
What do you think the market for early-career ER right now (especially small shops)? I think I read somewhere people receiving hundreds of applications for a position which is nuts. Also any tips for networking if you don't have an alumni network? I feel like cold outreach is just a shot in the dark - some folks still reply but the % is not that high
