Navigating Career Choices: Big 4 Audit vs. Schroders Wealth Management
As a recent graduate about to start an audit role at one of the Big Four, I’ve had mixed feelings about the position. Initially, I was skeptical due to the stories I’ve heard about the job and the salary. My passion has always been in asset management (or possibly wealth management), but unfortunately, this recruitment cycle didn’t go as planned.
Now that I’ve started, I’m actually finding it alright. I’m currently covering the financial services and asset management sector, which aligns with my interests. Over the next few years, I’ll be working toward my ACA qualification, which will take about three years of study and work. I’ve also made some good friends, and I appreciate the location and flexibility of the office environment.
A Potential Opportunity
Before starting my current role, I applied for a Wealth Management graduate program at a huge AM firm, think Schroders/L&G/ Invesco/Wellington. This program offers a higher salary, along with opportunities to gain the IMC and CFA/CWA qualifications. Wealth management is something I find intriguing, and I could see myself specialising in portfolio management if given the chance.
That said, the graduate program is smaller, with only 2-5 graduates in a cohort, and I’ve heard it’s not as diverse. However, I really like the culture at the AM firm based on my interactions with people from the firm. I’ve made it to the final stage of interviews, and I’m seriously considering making the switch if I receive an offer.
The Dilemma: Should I Move or Stay?
While I’m drawn to wealth management, I have a stronger preference for asset management, and I’m unsure if I’d regret leaving my current role. The versatility of my Big Four role appeals to me, and it could open up various opportunities in the future. I’m trying to stay open-minded, but audit is not a long-term interest for me. Ideally, I would like to move into deal advisory if I stay at the Big Four.
I’d appreciate any advice or insights on the following:
• Is it worth switching to the WM role at the AM firm, or should I stay where I am? i.e. What are the main advantages and disadvantages of making the move versus staying in my current role?
• Does the AM firm offer better exit opportunities, prestige, or earning potential compared to the Big Four?
• If I eventually want to transition into asset management, which path would make that move easier?
