Confused & Lost in How to Start for AM

Hello, current sophomore here looking to break into AM

I guess, I am just overall very confused about how to break into this industry vs IB where I feel like there are a lot more resources available. Specifically, I want to become a Portfolio Manager for AM, but I have no idea where to start.

To give a little background, I recently switched from being into a different field (not finance) into finance, and AM drew me in the most. Due to this, I wanted to build experience and I started reaching out to several different firms in the area I know I have to be in over the summer (Austin, TX). However, it's been silence in communication or when I try to find more online, I am getting more wealth management firms vs asset management

Could someone help me kind of setting up a more guided timeline information on what to do and expect for asset management? For instance, you should have a summer internship and then get a MBA or whatever it may be.

Also, if anyone knows someone in Asset Management in Austin, TX, would you be willing to connect me haha!

Breaking into Asset Management (AM) can feel overwhelming, but with a clear plan, you can set yourself up for success. Here's a structured timeline and actionable steps based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. Sophomore Year (Current Stage)

  • Build Knowledge & Passion for Investing: Start reading foundational books like The Intelligent Investor by Ben Graham or Margin of Safety by Seth Klarman. Demonstrating a genuine passion for investing is critical in AM.
  • Networking: Begin reaching out to professionals in AM. Use LinkedIn to connect with alumni or professionals in Austin, TX. Attend CFA Society events in your area to meet people in the industry.
  • Target Internships: Focus on securing a summer internship, even if it's not directly in AM. Roles in equity research, wealth management, or finance-related positions can help build relevant skills.
  • CFA Level I Prep: Consider starting CFA Level I prep if you're serious about AM. Passing Level I signals your commitment to the field.

2. Junior Year

  • Summer Internship in AM or Related Field: Aim for an internship at a boutique AM firm, equity research, or even wealth management if AM roles are scarce. Larger firms like Fidelity, T. Rowe Price, or Wellington often have junior internship programs.
  • Cold Emailing & Networking: Continue reaching out to professionals. Cold emailing smaller firms in Austin, TX, can be effective. Highlight your passion for investing and willingness to learn.
  • Develop Technical Skills: Learn financial modeling and valuation. WSO offers resources and bootcamps that can help you build these skills.

3. Senior Year

  • Full-Time Applications: Apply to AM analyst roles or related positions like equity research. If direct AM roles are limited, consider starting in sell-side equity research or investment banking, as these can be stepping stones to AM.
  • CFA Level I Exam: If you haven’t already, aim to pass CFA Level I before graduation.

4. Post-Graduation

  • Entry-Level Role: Start in AM, equity research, or a related field. If you don’t land an AM role immediately, focus on gaining relevant experience and networking.
  • CFA Progression: Continue with CFA Levels II and III. The CFA is highly valued in AM and can help you stand out.
  • MBA (Optional): If you’re unable to break into AM directly, consider pursuing an MBA from a top program. This can help you rebrand and access AM opportunities.

Additional Tips:

  • Focus on Smaller Firms: Many boutique AM firms don’t have structured recruiting processes. Cold emailing and networking are key to breaking in.
  • Be Persistent: Silence in communication is common. Follow up politely and consistently.
  • Portfolio Management Goal: Understand that becoming a Portfolio Manager typically takes years of experience. Most start as research associates or analysts and work their way up.

If you're struggling to find AM firms in Austin, TX, try searching for "investment management" or "equity research" firms instead of "asset management." Wealth management firms may also have AM divisions, so don’t rule them out entirely.

Lastly, keep networking! If you can’t find direct connections, consider reaching out to professionals on WSO forums who might be willing to help. Good luck!
