Eaton Vance Reputation
I have to opportunity to join Eaton Vance's equity team following undergrad. I was wondering what the reputation/exits would be for the role. I come from a non-target so I really wish to pursue a Wharton/Columbia VIP MBA. Long term, I am still not sure if I want to do LO or HF route, but I do know I want to be in the public markets. The competing offer is for a top BB ER position.
I was hoping someone could shed some light on Eaton Vance's name in the space given they are a step below all the top LOs. Thanks so much!
Bump
I would definitely take Eaton Vance / MSIM over the bank offer. Rep not what it used to be but still a name on the buy side. Wharton and Columbia both care a lot about hard stats - if you do well on the GMAT think you’ll be in good shape
I would 100% take Eaton Vance over BB ER. I have heard that they have had some issues post-acquisition, but it’s still a really good LO AM. MS acquisition probably ruins the culture and diminishes the appeal a bit, but provides you with a larger platform and good distribution strategy. Regardless, LO AM over ER every day of the week.
Good chance you also won’t need to get an MBA, so I wouldn’t be too concerned about that. You can go straight to analyst if you’re good or lateral to a different AM/HF.
Thank you so much! I appreciate the response! This definitely makes me feel a lot better. Would starting at Eaton Vance open up the ability to jump to the Tier 1 LOs?
Just curious, what are some of the issues they've been encountering post acquisition?
Solid rep in the LO space, from what I understand they are more well known on the FI side but perhaps that's just because I'm in the space, they have a solid muni product FWIW. Can't comment on the MS acquisition but from what I understand they are operating autonomously for the time being, I'd assume the main impact would be lower comp at the more senior levels as MS takes their cut and more corporate BS to work around. Can't comment on any cultural impacts as I don't know anyone there at the moment, but for some time as a junior its a good place to be. I used to know two people at EV and they both loved working there. Definitely take it over BB ER, you'll have better WLB, pay should be I/L, and B-School exits will be stronger. You should have no issue getting looks at top B-Schools and if not, I'm sure lateraling to a top-tier manager wouldn't be too difficult.
I honestly have heard mixed responses on what they are better at between FI and Equities. I got a spot in their Equity arm, so I can't really be bothered between which is better at this point. And to be honest, I would rather be doing Equites than FI. Thank you for the response!
Curious, what was the offer? (Wondering for comparison purposes with another Boston AM.)
