JPM AWM
Hey everyone, I was curious about whether I should go into AWM or not. The money looks really good making 6 figures and being back home has its benefits monetarily even if Im paying for it with my mental health. The only thing is that I dont find the work very intellectually interesting at all and being a UVA student, I find that AWM wouldnt be a good use of my education. My real goal for the short term is to be an ER Associate and so I was hoping I could also get some insight into how feasible an AWM -> ER switch could be and how long that might take.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:
AWM Career Prospects: While AWM (Asset and Wealth Management) can offer lucrative compensation, especially for rainmakers and advisors who excel at building and managing client relationships, it may not always align with those seeking intellectually stimulating work. AWM often involves a mix of financial planning, relationship management, and investment strategy, which may not fully leverage a rigorous academic background like yours from UVA.
AWM to ER Transition: Transitioning from AWM to Equity Research (ER) is not the most common path, but it is feasible. ER typically values strong analytical skills, a deep understanding of financial modeling, and the ability to think like an investor. If your AWM role involves investment strategy or portfolio management, you could position yourself as someone with relevant experience. However, if your AWM role is more focused on client relationships and sales, the transition might require additional effort to demonstrate your analytical capabilities.
Timeline for Transition: The time it takes to switch from AWM to ER depends on how you position yourself and the opportunities you pursue. Building relevant skills, such as financial modeling and industry analysis, and networking with ER professionals can accelerate the process. You might also consider pursuing certifications like the CFA to strengthen your profile.
Alternative Pathways: If ER is your ultimate goal, you might explore other entry points that align more closely with ER, such as starting in a role that emphasizes analytical work (e.g., investment banking or sell-side research). This could provide a more direct route to your desired position.
Ultimately, the feasibility of the switch depends on how you leverage your current role, build relevant skills, and network within the industry. If AWM doesn't align with your long-term goals or intellectual interests, it might be worth considering other options that better suit your aspirations.

AWM is pretty broad, so could you kindly clarify whether you mean the AM function or the PB/WM function? Your career path after is definitely affected by where you start between the two.
believe typically people exit from ER to investing / trading seats. why do you not try and start in ER directly, if that's where you want to end up.
