Moving from Financial Advisor/Consultant to AM

I graduate with my BA in May with a non-finance major and accepted a job in NYC for a junior financial advisor. I am working on my SIE, Series 7, 66. My end goal is to end up in AM, is this a common transition? What are some things I can do accelerate and get a bigger $100B AUM firm sooner than later? I am planning on getting my MBA or masters after a few years of working.
