How to Break into the Asset Management Industry at Top Buy-Side Firms

I wanted to start a discussion here about how to get your foot in the door when applying for AM roles. I see too many misconceptions out there in these forums.

If anyone is interested in breaking into the asset management industry, feel free to reach out.

what’s most important these days is the story/narrative you’re able to portray through your resume and interview.

I’ve conducted interviews for summer analysts and FT entry level analyst roles at BlackRock and can tell you I’ve seen too many students from top schools with high GPAs and strong work experiences. This is the pre-requisite. This is not the main thing institutions are looking for when trying to discover future talent.

There’s a lot more to it than what is just on paper. I also speak from personal experience before I went into AM

Curious on what firms are looking for when it comes to non-target candidates with a few years of research experience at a much smaller shop? Even after a few years in a research seat, it is tough to even get a recruiter to call me back, let alone an interview with a top firm. How do you suggest getting past the resume stage?

The story/narrative for the person is different for everyone. It could be a personal project or side venture you’ve had to show your passion in the AM field. It could be your persistence in continuing education in a field or study or even a story of how your family introduced you to investing at a young age, etc. Everyone’s story is different, but painting the right picture of yourself is most important. Show commitment, grit, and passion for the field. Depending on your situation, the story you craft can be different. I can’t say details or help you craft your story without knowing the person you are.

In a business world that no longer values loyalty in the workplace, unfortunately, find ways to show your resilience and willingness to commitment. Coupled with a strong job market in the recent decade, employee turnover rates have never been higher. Show the employers that this is your passion and you’re in it for the long haul. They also like creative, diverse, and collaborative thinkers. There are various ways to show who you are as a person on your resume as well.
