Switching firms...how easy?

I'm working at an AM firm  (~100 billion AUM) on the west coast but am hoping to move back to NY. Mostly short-term, FI stuff. Given that many firms hire from undergrad and expect internal promotions, how hard is it to switch shops? Especially since the firm isn't a huge name brand, so I'm not sure what it's name recognition is in NY.
