Torn between AM and IB
Hey everyone,I was hoping to get some thoughts/advice on AM, particularly in comparison to IB. I'm just finishing up my undergrad and completed my summer internship in IB this past summer. I honestly enjoyed it, the team I'm with is fantastic even though the hours are what they are. I was happy to get a return offer and didn't think twice about accepting it, so I'm quite happy/certain about where I'll be for the next few years.
My dilemma is what comes after. I've always found asset management extremely interesting and every time I've been involved in a big project or competition (including being part of my school's investment club), I've found it super enjoyable. I feel like I get some extra stimulation from AM that I don't necessarily find in banking, though I also enjoyed the deal-making aspect in banking.
Overall I would say I'm definitely more passionate about AM/investing, but the industry prospects have me a bit worried. I've read a decent bit and I'm not too sure it's the right direction to go for someone with a full 25-30 year career ahead of them. On the other side, if the alternative is banking, I'm not sure how long I'd be able to stick with that lifestyle (particularly if I want a family in 8-10 years).
I guess I'm just asking if anyone went through a similar experience and has any thoughts or insights they'd be willing to share. I might be thinking too far ahead into the future but it is something I'd like to consider
Start with IB; AM only worth it after IB/sell-side experience once you get some solid trading/modelling skillset (which AM doesn't provide).
Yeah starting in IB was never a doubt for me, I think I’d like to spend 2-4 years here before considering other paths. My question was if the other path should even be considered, but I guess you answered that with “AM worth it” too
Only thing I'd add is to be on the lookout for LO AM associate roles once you're close to the one year mark. Those positions open rarely so I would go after every opening if AM is truly your end goal. A year in IB should be enough to learn all the financial modeling you need (you won't learn trading in IB).
Are there any limitations of starting in AM directly after undergrad? (UK)
Most people I met in LO AM started in IB - even the ones that were research associates had to go back to business school after.
LO?
