Trader/Analyst for government money manager

What is the typical career progression (and possible exit opps) for the following type of position:

several billion dollar asset management firm that manages money for gov't and non-profits

Role -

Researching investment opportunities and performing trades under portfolio manager

Tradeable securities include government securities, short-term corporates and other types of money market instruments(CD's, commercial paper, etc.)
