Which offer to take to transition into IB/LevFin/DCM?

Have an offer for a mid-corporate commercial banking position at Citi (more focused on the relationship management side) as well as a corporate banking underwriting/ portfolio management offer at a foreign balance sheet bank.

Which position should I take if the goal is to maximize my chances of pivoting into IB/DCM/LevFin?

Thanks!

To maximize your chances of transitioning into IB, DCM, or LevFin, here's what you should consider based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Mid-Corporate Commercial Banking at Citi:

    • Citi is a well-known name with a strong reputation in the financial industry, which could carry weight when networking or applying for IB/DCM/LevFin roles.
    • However, the role is more focused on relationship management, which might not directly develop the technical skills (e.g., financial modeling, credit analysis) that are highly valued in IB/DCM/LevFin.
    • Networking opportunities within Citi could be a significant advantage, especially if you can connect with teams in IB or DCM.
  2. Corporate Banking Underwriting/Portfolio Management at a Foreign Balance Sheet Bank:

    • This role is likely to provide more exposure to credit analysis, cash flow analysis, and risk management, which are transferable skills for IB/DCM/LevFin.
    • While the bank's brand might not be as strong as Citi's, the technical experience gained in underwriting and portfolio management could make you a more attractive candidate for a lateral move.

Recommendation:

  • If your goal is to pivot into IB/DCM/LevFin, the Corporate Banking Underwriting/Portfolio Management role at the foreign balance sheet bank might be the better choice. It offers more relevant technical experience, which is critical for making the transition.
  • That said, if you choose Citi, you should actively network within the bank and seek opportunities to work on projects or rotations that align with IB/DCM/LevFin skill sets.

Ultimately, the decision depends on your ability to leverage the role for networking and skill-building. If you can combine the technical experience from the foreign bank with strong networking efforts, you'll be in a solid position to make the transition.
