Plan B for Equity Research hopeful?

Hi, monkeys!

I am an undergraduate hoping to break into equity research. Even though I believe I would love that role, cuts and scarce FT opportunities make me want to have a plan B.
However, because the job listings all say similar things, I am having a hard time differentiating some roles from others.
That's why I would like to ask you guys for some help: what other roles do you recommend in finance that involve independent work, accounting, understanding economics, modeling, and lots of reading?

Thank you in advance for helping!

I did 2 ER internships on the buyside when i was in college. I also was looking for a similar type of role. I ended up in Credit Underwriting at a BB which i really enjoy because its all the accounting and analyzing companies aspects of ER but you get to apply them to deals. At most BB’s credit teams you work closely with all parts of the Bank. So you’ll do debt financing for M&A transactions, bridge-to-Bonds with the DCM team, working capital lines with the CBK team etc. Also there are a lot more roles in credit so it can be slightly easier to get into, then you can switch into ER if you want. Exit opps are really good

Thank you so much! I had noticed that a few analysts I know had worked in Credit before ER and vice-versa, but I didn't know whether that was just a choice they'd made because opportunities had come up or whether the roles were actually similar.

Your work seems fascinating. Now I'll have to do more research and figure out if this should become Plan A...
