I have seen absolutely no appetite for this in my search, even among investment teams that are physically distributed around the US but each in person in different cities and time zones

And can it ever be?

This makes sense to me. (I’m not the OP). So much of the industry is about relationship and trust. It’s much easier to work in office for a few years, build trust, and let someone work remote. Or if you have existing relationship and/or really hit it off on interview, that might work too.

I have spoken to ~30 different funds/teams over the past year and only one out of them has a remote policy (they are ~$500mn in AUM).
It is extremely rare to be able to find a remote position. However, the good news is that there are a ton of team's that are in the office but working for a PM that is remote (I am counting a PM working out of Miami as remote if the team is based in NYC). So if you do make it to PM you can likely have the flexibility you want.

I wouldn't hire remote. It's not hard to find people willing to come in. If you worked in a group for a while in person, and then eventually some people became remote, that kind of thing might happen. Someone mentioned that PMs can be remote. Well yeah. If you have a pm making money you're not gonna care if they're on a trading desk or sitting on the toilet. That's a revenue position and it's completely different. If you're 100% remote, my guess is, unless things change, you're not going to be competitive.
