Watch for Career Milestone
I've reached a major career milestone (moving from sellside to buyside). I want to celebrate the move with a classy watch.
I currently wear a Tudor Black Bay 36 in blue (the original with the smile dial). I love the size and versatility of this watch. However, I'm looking for something dressier with this purchase.
I'm considering the below options, but am open to other suggestions $10k or below. Does anyone have feedback or suggestions on my list?
- Universal Geneve White Shadow (Vintage; Blue Dial; ~$3.5k)
- Cartier Ronde Solo (Black Leather Band; ~$4k)
- Cartier Tank Must (Black Leather Band; ~$4k)
- IWC Portofino (~$4k)
- Cartier Tank Basculante (Neo-Vintage; ~$7k)
- JLC Reverso (~$8k)
- Grand Seiko SBGY007 (~$8k)
- GO Panomatic (~$10k)
- Breguet Classique (~$12k)

Recommendation:
If you’re looking for something truly iconic and dressy, the JLC Reverso or Cartier Tank Basculante would be excellent choices. For a more unique and modern option, the Grand Seiko SBGY007 or GO Panomatic stand out. If you’re willing to stretch your budget slightly, the Breguet Classique is hard to beat for its timeless elegance.

If I am offering my two cents, on the lower end, the tank must offer a classy look on black leather, but can also be a good statement piece if you can find one of the full coloured dial variations. This watch also has a distinctive look that differs from your black bay, and on the upper end, the reverso accomplishes a similar feat - albeat with a little more to say.
So those two are great options. I think for the value, the Tank is likely the better choice. Also leaves you some cash left over to buy a really nice leather band that will last and feel better. But man...that Grand Seiko is beautiful as well. If you are okay with having two blue watches, that might be the play.
Thanks! I'm a big watch fan (which is why I have so many on my list). I agree that the tank is a fantastic value, and I will almost certainly buy one at some point. I'm just not sure if I want to get something more unique to mark the occasion
Cartier Santos is class. i think the one with the green dial is so nice
The Santos is amazing (love the classic medium size). The only thing holding me back is that it is a scratch magnet. The Dumont is great as well, although I generally prefer automatic movements
The Breguet, GO or JLC are head and shoulders above the others from a movement and finishing standpoint. Those three are all "watch guy" watches and are really great value for the money imo.
I own a GO panomatic so take this with a grain of salt, but I find it to be a more versatile watch than the others. It is easy to dress up or down, especially if you find one on a bracelet. When buying, definitely go grey market as the discounts to retail are significant.
I love the GO Panomatic and have seen them in person, but haven't tried one on yet. How does it wear on the wrist? I prefer smaller watches (34 - 40) and am worried it may be too large for my preference
I do not believe it wears large at all. I like 40mm as a dress watch size, especially given the dial on this one. I have it on a bracelet and have no problem with it fitting under a dress shirt sleeve or wearing with a suit.
All that said, it is a $10k watch so go try one on before you buy it. You shouldn' have a problem finding a dealer that has one in stock in a large city.
Couldn't agree more. I say go for the Panomatic or the Reverso
The breguet is absolute class - haven't come across any for $12k that aren't at least 10+ years old though
If going the dress watch route, would also consider the JLC master thin. And if you're willing to stretch the budget / go older vintages, could look at the ALS Saxonia
You're correct that I'd be looking at an older Breguet. The ALS Saxonia (especially the Black or Blue dial variants with the specs) is one of my favorite all-time pieces, but is too much money for me to spend in my mid-20s
Congrats on your career milestone, and great taste with the current selection you have laid out here. I am also a Tudor BB 36mm wearer and have loved my time with the watch, but also understand the desire to upgrade!
I'd say, given that the BB is a more sportier watch, going with the Cartier or JLC makes a lot of sense to mix up your collection. I share the same reservations about the Santos' scratch magnet reputation, but you could check out the new titanium edition, which I have heard good things about.
If you are interested in getting a more dive-oriented tool watch, I would look into the Glashuette SeaQ or the Blancpain bathyscaphe, as more refined toolsy type of options.
Awesome list here. I would go with the JLC, elite watchmaking and a genuine watch-lovers class. I really like the Cartiers but the lack of a seconds hand would just make them a lot less fun to look at for me. Haven't seen Grand Seiko get enough love on this thread. The dial on the SBGY007 is beautiful, and I absolutely plan to own one someday (probably the SBGA211), but at the end of the day Grand Seiko just doesn't feel like a celebration/achievement watch. Just my two cents as a college senior who really likes watches and probably doesn't have a clue what he's talking about.
Not even close, go with the Breguet
JLC a good second option
