Bombed interviews at the place once but thinking about trying again - good idea?

So I interview at a few of these funds. One I bombed at the final stages (me and plus 1 guy left in the final stage) and the other one I was kicked after the second/third rounds. That was 2 years ago. I performed ok on both. Think I'm way better now. They are hiring again. Should I try again, or is it unusual?

Reapplying after bombing interviews is not unusual, and it can actually be a smart move if you’ve significantly improved since your last attempt. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to consider:

  1. Highlight What’s Changed: If you decide to reapply, your application (especially your cover letter) should focus on what has changed since your last attempt. Emphasize how you’ve grown, improved your skills, and why you’re now a stronger candidate. This is critical to show that you’re not the same person they passed on before.

  2. Timing Matters: Two years is a reasonable gap, and it’s likely that the team or hiring managers may have changed. Even if they remember you, a materially stronger application can earn you a fresh look.

  3. Interview Skills: If you feel your interview performance was the issue last time, make sure you’ve addressed those weaknesses. Practice mock interviews, refine your technical and behavioral responses, and ensure you’re ready to demonstrate your growth.

  4. Networking: If possible, try to connect with people at the fund before reapplying. Building relationships can help you stand out and potentially bypass some of the initial screening stages.

  5. No Harm in Trying: As long as you’ve improved and can articulate why you’re a better fit now, there’s no harm in reapplying. Many candidates reapply and succeed the second time around, especially if they’ve addressed the gaps from their previous attempt.

Go for it, but make sure your application and interview preparation reflect the progress you’ve made!
